JVC HA-DX1 impressions - Page 2

Just realized one question I did not ask that important. How do these sound unamped? I liked the SQ of the AD700 unamped from my Ipod Touch 2G and also from my slightly more powerfull built in sound card in my computer. Are the JVC's easily driven? The specs and what I have read suggests this would be the case but actual people with experience is always a good thing. Last question I promise.

If they can be played from my sources well I will be ordering these from Overstock.com this weekend.

I ended up testing a pair of Senn 595's (better than the 555's in comfort along with better midrange and treble but still not what I am looking for), and pair of BD 990's (very tinny sounding off my Ipod, I suspect they need more juice), and then a pair of Sont SA1000 (the only open air Sony I have seen, these things had crazy treble to the point of it hurting my ears at times and weak bass in comparison to anything I have tried including the AD700). So I wasn't moved to buy any of them, but what I did gain was an appreciation for how different phones fit, I now know I will not buy the AD700 no matter that I love it's sound as I won't be happy about it's fit (way to loose on my small little head).

So that long story short, I decided to take a chance and I ordered a pair of these fine looking phones from Overstock as they actually let us lowly Canadian's order from them, it cost $125CAN shipped but that's no more expensive than the AD700 from the US and $50 cheaper than buying them from a local store.

I figure if I don't like them, someone who want's more bass than the AD700 will likely be willing to trade (and I'll jerry rig the darn things so they don't fall off my noggin!).

I'll post my finding after I get them.

very cool - let us know your impressions!

Well they finally arrived.

First impressions:

Very comfortable, like the ability to set the width. Well built in comparsion to my Philips HP910.
Isolation is more than I would liuke so good if you want isolation.

Now to the important part, sound...

Not impressed out of the gate

The highs are nice but the midrange (lower end) is very subdued at the moment VERY much so in comparison to the Philip's (this may be because I started to get used to the deep bass of the Philips). The bass is definitely lighter than the Philips.

I have just set the phones up to burnin with a wide range of music including some heavy drumming and lots of lower tones with a 1 hour blank song to give them a break every hour. I am off this weekend for 2-3 days so they will have lots of time to burnin, I will post back on how they sound after the weekend. I may have time later tonight after giving them a few hours of burnin, if I notice any difference in a psoitive way I'll post something. Otherwise I will wait until I come back on Sunday or possible Monday Tuesday next week. I really do hope these open up in the midrange a bit as well as the mid-bass and bass.

Out of the box the AD700 was much nicer than these but this may just be the difference between one set of phones needing much more burnin compared to another.

good thing they're digital ready! I was getting worried there for a second

LOL, gotta love the hype these guys spin . Actually these are sounding a bit better even with a couple hours of burnin. They are loosening up a bit, not quite so crisp which was actually detracting of the music as it was intrusive. I am not sure about the bass but I did start to get used to a bassy phone in the HP910. I think I will have a very good idea of what they are going to be really like by Monday maybe Tuesday as I suspect they will need a good burnin if what I have read about JVC cans is correct. I also need to remind myself that I was hoping they wouldn't be to bassy and just get into the sound experience they offer.

After another 30 hours of burnin I took another listen and these phones really started to sound good. The mid and high are very good and the detail is impressive to say the least. All of my issues aside from one were gone. The one issue that never went away was the bass, these phones just didn't seem to have enough bass, mid bass, and possibly even lower end midrange.

The problem was I really liked the upper range. So I got radical! (well for me radical ), I decided the problem was inadequate amplification. So I researched various options for getting a headphone amplifier, DAC, and or combination of the above.

In the end I picked up an Auzentech X-Fi Forte sound card that has a built in headphone amplifier designed for Hi-Fi headphones and a decent DAC with the ability to roll OpAmp's. Slapped the puppy in my computer and let er rip. WHAT A DIFFERENCE!!! The lower midrange and all the bass was suddenly there! Along with a TON OF DETAIL I didn't know existed! Without touching the EQ, bass knobs, or anything these phones sound fantastic and if I really do want extra bass I barely after to increase one of those settings to get it in spades. Now all I have to do is play with the apps and features of this new very kewl sound card to see how to get what I want out of it. Musically it is all I could have ever asked for and I suspect games and movies are going to benefit as well probably even more.

As for the DX1, if someone doesn't really want alot of bass and loves their midrange and highs with alot of detail this phone is for you. If you want the bass you do need an amplifier in my opinion though. Amplified I would say this headset is kind of like an AD700 except it's a closed phone and has slightly more bass, it doesn't have as much soundstage as the AD700 though. Maybe another way to look at it, is it's like an A700 without the midrange suck out.

Just as an aside I have tried my Philips HP910 with my new soundcard as well and they now have to much bass but still sound damn impressive. They give me a serious bass blast when I want it and due to their open design give me the big sound stage.

Out of the two phones I am right now finding myself gravitating to the JVC more than the Philips, the detail of the JVC is just to much to not use them. I also find they are sliightly less fatiguing for me and more comfortable.

For anyone looking for cheap amplification and a better DAC than what is in most PC's default sound cards, this Forte card is very nice and Auzentech has a $20 mail in rebate offer going on right now. I will have paid $125 when the dust settles. All the DACs, DAC/amps, Amps I looked at were going to cost about that much or a lot more (having owned a Fiio E5, I don't consider it an option for my needs). It's not portable but it will kick my games up a knotch or two and I don't see myself walking around with fullsize can's on very often anyway.

OH, one other thing. The Creative MediaSource 5 player that came with this card as part of the SW bundle kicks butt on iTune's IMO way better detail and sound from that player, I will use iTune for my Ipod synch as I have to but I'll be re-ripping any iTune's m4a files I have created and will be using this other player on my PC. Just out of curiosity what does anyone else use for listening to music on their PC?

I'm curious here. I use a mini^3 with the DX1 but its sound profile isn't driving the bass as much as I'd like. I want portability and have heard that the Fiio e5 amp does a good job with AD700. Anyone have an opinion they'd care to offer about a DX1 + Fiio e5 combination?

tried it out. mp3 player to e5 to hadx1. lots of detail, only a little bass. bass comes out when cranked up but not a realistic listening level. these headphones seem to love at least medium amping. if u have a pc (and u must) try pc to mini3 and adjust the eq in the software player you are using or the soundcard software
