They still have limits

I absolutely love my Ety's. What they do well is very, very nice indeed.

But two of those things are not "air" around the music, nor deep textured bass. For those reasons, they cannot be my one-and-only, or even my first choice at home.

Very evil thought. That was actually one approach I considered when I bought my RPX-100, a KGSS with 4070 but it never happened as Justin never replied to any of my emails at the time. It is not likely to happen now.

Yes there are certainly phons that do certain aspects better but as I dont believe THE perfect in all aspects phone exist it is all about compromise and balance and from the selection of phones I have owned or auditioned my current rig is the best balance for my musical taste and logistical needs.

I still use them, but neither at home (full-size cans) nor on a plane (er4p wins). I'll wear the Sf5Pro for a walk, or at the gym.

Hi all !
May be a bit off topic but can't help to ask you Ety's lovers : how different do YOU think the ER6i is compared to the ER4's ? These are twice more expensive.
I'm asking cause I'm planning to buy either ones, to go with my 4Gen iPod + Mini^3.
Please help

Never heard an ER6i. You could also consider the HF5 (or the stereo telephone headset version HF2 if you have need of the microphone) which comes somewhere in between the 2 others price wise. It uses ER4 drivers but they are not handmatched to low tolerances. On the other hand it has a much nicer cable with hardly any microphonics, no pod on the cable, more flexible and a lower profile in the ear, no alien antennas stickig out. As far as I know it is an exclusive product for amazon.com. Also if you can get it a used Altec Lansing im616 or im716. They are (now discontinued) oem implementations of (again unmatched) ER4 drivers (or something very close) and are usually priced in the ER& price range or lower.

Hello all,

I am just lurking in this thread, enjoying reading about this Ety recabling. Though I am hardly any expert, I find I agree with jpelg's assessment of these fine headphones. As a portable headphone, the ER-4 is really great but when I listen to my HD 580s, the soundstage opens up, the "air" of the instruments returns, the bass deepens.

I guess I'm just trying to figure out if it would be worth it for me to try this upgrade. It sounds intriguing to say the least. Being that I usually listen to my 4Ps unamped, straight through my 5G iPod and iPhone 3G, I'm guessing this modification is not for me. Although if I could get more soundstage depth and just a BIT more bass out of them, it would be worth it. Those times when I crave that soundstage out of my portable gear, I hook up my 580s with my iPhone or iPod using a Simpl A1 amp (discontinued, I think, and not well respected in these parts if I recall, but works well for me).

I had the "normal" APS P cable (the one anthonyfirst has now) and to me straight out of an iPhone 3G it did improve the areas you mention. Wether the improvements will be worth the price to yuo I dont know.

Thank you for the information nc8000. I'm kind of at a crossroads of sorts because I could go for this cable or purchase another IEM that has now piqued my curiosity: the Monster Turbines. At the moment, I'm leaning towards trying the Turbines and if I don't like them, sending them back and trying the APS cable.

I really love my ER4S. I use mine at work and they are awesome.

I started using them with a Headroom Total Bithead, then swithed to a Meier Corda Aria, using Aria as a DAC. Then I used them with Aria and a nice DVD-Audio player as a source. Then I replaced the Aria with Singlepower MPX3 and replaced the DVD-Audio player with Meridian 508.20. It is truly amazing how great it sounds now.

I mean REALLY great. It's hard to get any work done now :-).

If I was hard pressed to sell my headphones, I would sell my RS-1, HD600/Cardas, K-701 and keep the ER4S.

I think the conclusion here is the ER-4(s) scale exceptionally well with upgraded DACs and AMPs

My main headphone at home are the Ultrasone PRO2500's (profile updated).

The PK1's are my wife's, who has never used them, so they sit ignored in their box (the earbuds, not my wife )
