P to S adaptor

Received this today and as usual the build quality is great. I have to admit though that the sound differences I hear are much, much smaller than what I seem to remember the difference between a S and a P was. Also there does not seem to be any difference to the loudness with or without the cable, I had expected to have to turn the volume up to compensate for the extre resistance.

Its interesting that you mention that nc8000. I've noticed that my 25ohm Denons needed volume at higher positions then my 45ohm ESW10JPN... never did figure that one out.

x2 the difference between the 225's and ED8's is only a negligible ~2 ohm's according to headroom and the difference in my pico settings is much larger for 225's, interesting how that works.

I am just lurking in this thread, enjoying reading about this Ety recabling. Though I am hardly any expert, I find I agree with jpelg's assessment of these fine headphones. As a portable headphone, the ER-4 is really great but when I listen to my HD 580s, the soundstage opens up, the "air" of the instruments returns, the bass deepens.

I guess I'm just trying to figure out if it would be worth it for me to try this upgrade. It sounds intriguing to say the least. Being that I usually listen to my 4Ps unamped, straight through my 5G iPod and iPhone 3G, I'm guessing this modification is not for me. Although if I could get more soundstage depth and just a BIT more bass out of them, it would be worth it. Those times when I crave that soundstage out of my portable gear, I hook up my 580s with my iPhone or iPod using a Simpl A1 amp (discontinued, I think, and not well respected in these parts if I recall, but works well for me).
Frankly if budget is a concern at all and you don't just have money lying around that you don't know what to do with. If you want better sound from the ER4 the first thing to try is a better amp. Once you have the perfect amp and the perfect DAC and the perfect everything you want THEN you start spending $200 on things like cables.

Changing impedance on the same phone will change the sensitivity, but the drivers themselves have a sensitivity value. You can't just look at a phone's impedance and make any conclusions about sensitivity. For that matter you cannot say anything but a general statement about drivability either. The impedance is a nominal impedance. It changes with frequency.

Since this thread has become an ETY lovefest I must add my piece.

I don't care how old they are or what complaints people make about them being single drive unit. These phones are the most versatile, most impressive IEMs I have ever used. They come from a company with a audiologist background and they are designed like precision instruments.

I started with them out of an iPod 4G, then they got moved up to line-out and Cmoy, then Supermicro I, then Supermini 3 and then the LaRocco PR-II.

If there is one amp that is special with the ER4 it is the LaRocco. Whatever anyone says about ER4 bass nobody can argue that it is not deep. It may be lacking a bit in impact, but it is always deep and VERY detailed. The PR-II has a little bass contour knob that was designed to accentuate the deepest of bass without affecting the mids. When the ER4-S is connected to this amp and the knob is turned there is no limit to what the ER4 can handle. They scale up in ways you could not have imagined. They never bottom out or crap out, they just take the extra bass signal and add impact to what is still a very detailed bass playback. You could keep connecting it to better and better playback equipment and never be disappointed with how it grows.

The detail is amazing, the bass depth and detail is unbeatable. Some may argue they sound dry, but I never could complain about it. If I want lush I'll just put on the SE530. But the ER4 once you find the right tip (for me Comply) you can never complain that you are not happy.

With all this hype for multi driver IEMs I've wondered if anyone has thought about what crossover networks do to the audio signal. When you buy a $20,000 pair of speakers you are not paying for the drivers or even construction as much as you are paying for the designer's crossover design. Many things can go wrong in crossover design and when it is perfect it is still a loss to not having a crossover. A crossover is a necessary evil in speaker audio, but for IEMs I think they are a little overkill. I know many of you love your JH13 or whatever this month's FOTM is. It used to be Sensaphonics and then it was some UK sensaphonics, then it was UE and then some Westone and now it is JH. I have no doubt whatever it is this month it is good and I'm not biased against multidriver since I love the SE530, but the point is this has stood the test of time since 1991. No other IEM can claim to hold on to relevance after so much time.

Hello Folks.
Ressurecting a very old thread! I have the ER4S and love it but now have the RSA SR71-B amp so am very interested in going the balanced route with my ety's. Firstly. Are the stock cables captive to the red and blue earpieces or are they plugged in like triple.fi10's and secondly are there any cable makers making this combo to work with my amps balanced terminal.

Thanks in advance.

The cable seperates from the earpieces where the blue/red meets the barrel. They are not designed for repeated removal as the connection can get loose. APS makes cables for these and I expect he can fit a Kobiconn connector if there is room inside for the resistors (25 ohm for P and 100 ohm for S or any other value upon request). You can also on eBay buy some adaptors with buildin resistors that allow the use of Westone style cables letting you use Whiplash and other cable builders
