Yup, it's still all packed and ready to go. No point in unpacking electronics when there's no power to use them with. Although I've got a small generator now, maybe I should fire up the headphone rig tonight.

A good time. Lots of gear. A big thanks to Erik for setting it up. I believe that there will be lots of very good pictures. Initial impressions from me after The Little Monkey goes to bed.

Very cool meet. There was a lot of great gear that I (and my girlfriend) enjoyed. Some highlights include:
-Not one but TWO R10s, one of which (owned by Ray Samuels) I got to spend a good amount of time with, both on his tiny Mustang amp and on my ß22. What can I say, they sound amazing. Ray liked the ß22.
-Grado HP-1000. I was surprised by how comfortable it was, considering that my first impression was that it was incredibly stiff metal. It was definitely my favorite of the array of Grados at the meet (viz. GS1000, RS-1, SR-80).
-Sennheiser HE60 & HEV70. I preferred them to the Stax 007. Some suggested that the HE60 may take less 'getting accustomed to' for my dynamic-loving ears. They sound like incredibly detailed HD650s to me. I can't wait to try its big brother.
-Audio Technica ATH-ESW9 and ESW10. Both were absolutely gorgeous and sounded wonderful. I didn't hear a huge difference between them but I thought the ESW10s fit better. My girlfriend (naturally) preferred the ESW10s. In terms of looks, the 10s win, hands down, in my book.
-nikongod's very cool 'beast' of a tube amp. I only heard it briefly but what I heard sounded very good. And conceptually it's very interesting as well.
-Getting to share my Audio Technica woodies and ß22 with an appreciative and cool bunch of people.

Thanks to Erikzen for organizing this and vcoheda for lending me his very nice CD player. I look forward to the next meet!

I always enjoy meeting new people at head-fi meets, as well as seeing my friends from past meets.

It was nice meeting you and your girlfriend moody. Beta 22 for your third project? Wow! Your setup sounded very nice.

Glad you could make the trip Ray. I can't imagine a NY head-fi meet without you.

vcoheda, I was really enjoying your HE60/HEV70 setup. Depending on what Sennheiser releases in a month, that combo could be on my short list.

It was very nice meeting you in person Erik. Glad to see you were enjoying your camera. ^_^
The meet was very popular. Thank you again for coordinating this and getting the ball rolling. I had a fun time.

It is always nice to see the Woo Family. I really enjoyed all of your amp in attendance. The GES and HeAudio combination is very nice to say the least.

It is also nice to see Fang again. Those RE0's were really something special! I have heard offerings from shure for over 500$ that didn't sound half as good. I especially love that it has a smooth sound. It is basically like I am putting on a set of full size headphones. Very impressive.

It was great to get to meet the rest of the local NY head-fi contingent. NikonGod, The Monkey, Immtbiker and wife, booze, vinylespiner, j-pak, MrSlacker, Ian, plus so many others that I regrettably am forgetting at the moment.

It is the people who make these meets fun!

Impressions?

I enjoyed the HE60/HEV70 Combo.
I enjoyed the RE0.
I was surprised at how nice the Audio Technica ESW10 portables were. Quite a bit smoother than the ESW9's. I was not expecting the type of sound I heard out of them.
I was happy to reaffirm that my setup is just what I'm looking for. I've also reaffirmed that any significant upgrade is going to be in the thousands of dollars range.... so that'll help fend off the upgrade bug. ^_^

I'll get pictures up at some point.

Made an album of 97 pictures
SiBurning's Album: NY Metro Area Meet December 13, 2008

Unfortunately, the pictures load into the album backwards, so things make more sense if you start at the bottom of the last page and scroll up and click backwards to the top of page 1.
SiBurning's Album: NY Metro Area Meet December 13, 2008 -- Page 4

Click on any small picture in the album to see a larger, but still blurry looking version. If anyone wants to see select pictures with more detail, I can try to post a few better pictures, or figure out some way to get (up to) the 3000x2000 jpg or raw nef file to you. Thing is, I just don't have online space to put these.

Great meet, my thanks to all the organizers. Well worth the trip from NJ.

New stuff from Fang (amazing tiny speakers, and new 'stats), Ray's Mustang (first time up close with that), new prototype balanced re-cables from Stefan AudioArt (701s and 650s that sounded fantastic), and a New (Jersey!) vendor -- K Works (Igor Kuznetsoff ... no web site yet) with some great sounding balanced re-cables (also 701s and 650s!), plus interesting DAC and other goodies ... Igor is just starting to build for our market and his creations may turn some heads, we'll see what the future holds.

I am amazed how much the vendors gave to the silent auction - Ray, the Woos, Fang, Whiplash Audio, and more.

Really excellent day.

good meet.

there was lots of gear there. plenty of stats and dynamics. great sources and good variety of headphones. let's see.

Stats. i brought my KGSS + O2 and HE60 + HEV70. I briefly compared my O2 mki to the O2 mkii version and didn't detect any major differences. both sounded excellent. most people say the bottom end or bass is heavier on the mkii. that seems about right. i'm not so sure the mki is better though. a little different but that's about all. i see no reason to buy the mkii and if i owned the mkii i would see no strong reason to search out an mki. both are good. i listened to the O2 through my HeadAmp KGSS and the Woo GES. i preferred the KGSS. the dynamics were a bit better and the music was sharper or more in focus. i also listened to the Jade through a GES. it sounded good, but i wasn't overly impressed and don't see myself getting one at this time. as for the HE60, it really is a great headphone, even driven by the HEV70. if i were to substantially reduce my headphone collection, i could live with the baby orpheus alone - just a solid combo which plays well with all music.

Dynamics. the standouts here were the two RSA B52 rigs. one rig was just amazing. the source was a heavily modded audio note DAC and the system used SAA cables throughout - endorphin power cords and ICs, and all the headphones were hardwired with SAA's new reference headphone cable, the voice. probably the best i have ever heard the B52. another B52 setup was almost as good. it used an MBS platinum CD player and also very good cables (can't remember the name). the MBS player is really good. surprised not more people have them. the same owner also brought a HeadRoom balanced Max. great sound out of this one as well, but from the same source the B52, to my ears, sounded decently better. another solid setup was a single ended beta 22 built by moodysteve. he also brought with him an ATH W2002 and W11JPN. both sounded excellent from the beta but i think i preferred the W11JPN - a lush, full sound with a great mid range. would be a nice headphone to own. also listened to ray's R10 - just a magnificent headphone. so disappointing that it is no longer in production. shocked at how good it sounded from the tiny mustang. that little amp gets the job done. hooked up the R10 to the beta as well. more sweet sounds. briefly listened to modded D5000s with jena cable. didn't care for them.

Other. there was a reel-to-reel setup with a rockhopper built KGSS and O2 mkii. wow! so smooth. analogue at its finest. switching over to CD or other digital media, the glare/brightness was impossible to ignore. also, really liked Ari's turntable setup. vinyl is so cool. i would love to get a rig but i have so many CDs and am already lazy about using them. and of course there is the surface noise, pops and cracks. but still, vinyl is very nice.

it was fun to talk audio with all the head-fiers. and a *big* thanks to Erik who did all the work to set up the meet and to all the vendors and other members who generously donated to the silent auction or to pay for the room.

until next time . . .
