you can also get a portable amp/dac for your netbook if you want to upgrade on SQ.

I always wanted to get myself a netbook just to play fallout 1/2 during school. my other laptop is too heavy with all the textbooks i lug around -.-.

so many great old games out there

i got myself Ideapad S10e. i like that the headphone out doesn't hiss (that "cpu noise") like my other laptop does, but the drums aren't as punchy

Using a IBM t41 for movies and music.. both sound great through either my stereo or headphones .. Had a sony notebook before , which sounded terrible.

It's hit and miss I suppose, with notebooks.

I have a netbook,

They are a great little item. And quite portable. If only they had an spdif connection. I bought a cheap usb to spdif connection for mine and ran it as my primary source with no problems. I also see that there is a touch screen monitor version which would make a fantastic wall mounted media player with the right gear connected. Once again no digital or optical connection though.

I disagree. I thought the same way as yourself, until I started researching my own Netbook purchase. A SSD-based Netbook gives a significant performance hit. The reasons I read were cheap SSD's being used or possibly that the OS (XP, Linux) is actually optimized to run on a HDD. Also, what I like about the EEE 900HA is that the HDD and RAM are easily replaceable.

you can make some code changes to speed up the SSD in Linux, I'll try to dig up the link again, worked well with my aspire one.

full sized (2.5") SSD's are of course much nicer than disk based drives.

I also read that, OOTB, Windows 2000 did a better job with SSD's than either Linux or XP. Go figure. Also, I believe the EXT2 FS was mentioned as a better solution on SSD's for Linux, as opposed to EXT3.

If the kinks get worked out, I could probably replace the HDD in this thing with an SSD, down the road - just got my 900HA today!

my netbook is running Ubuntu, for my desktop with SSD's I'm using Vista
SSD drives are defiantly interesting.
I got 4 32gb OCZ core drives from neweggs black friday sale for my desktop
($65 each all said and done if I remember right)
with my crappy software raid controller I'm getting read speeds of 450mbps
others using hardware controllers are getting 600+mbps
single drive got me 155mbps average.

Oh, I recommend MediaPortal as the best music/video playback program. Get HDPHX VST (a crossfeed plug-in) and you've got crossfeed for everything. If the standard skin is slow, get XSkin. Be sure to get Ffdshow Mpeg-4 and Quicktime alternative if you need to play H.264, MOV, and all that good stuff!

thats weird, most integrated audio is usualy mediocre, not due to poor DSP and DAC impelemtation, but becuase usualy motherboard real estate is expendive, and working out clean and clear channels on the board to provide high quality audio is not cost effective, meaning interagted sound usualy lacks proper channel balancing, filtering and such,

its usualy rare for intergrated sound to be high quality,

I'm been testing my 900HA, this week. I agree that the SQ is better than I expected it to be. But, you really need to use the EQ to enhance things.

Using it straight out without any EQ, it doesn't quite match my Gigabeat or my Audigy2 - but, it's not bad, either. Adding my FiiO E3 definitely gives it a bit more "punch".

I went with the Dell Mini 9 16GB SSD and the Nuforce Icon Mobile amp/dac and am quite happy with the results. The combo definitely gets looks when I'm out "surfing". Piggybacked my Dash via bluetooth to the mini and voila!
