A very unusual portable rig, my traveling music box

I travel quite a bit -- about three or four flights a week, and my iPod with Apple Lossless, Sleek W-1, Corda 3Move amp, and UE10s go with me everywhere, since having access to the music I love is about the only way I can maintain some semblance of sanity. So I've invested in developing a portable rig housed inside an artful wood box. The sound is as about as good as it can get for a traveling rig and the UE10s create the best noise cancellation possible on an airplance.

Box is made by Don Boudreau (Jewelry Boxes|Men's Valet-Jewelry Boxes|Tea Boxes|Keepsake Boxes|Exotic Woods and Burls) out of exotic hardwoods. I had the sides of the box engraved with line portraits of my favorite composers (I listen mainly to classical music). I carry the box in a shoulder bag, so with the Sleek wireless and my UE10s (which I've modified to work with the Sleek W-1) I'm wireless whenever I'm on the go. Everything is mounted in foam, so it's all protected from the shocks of travel.

Here are some photos of the results.

The Corda 3Move sits under the iPod, and with the Sleek W1 transmitter plugged into its output jack. The wireless maintains its full range with the lid of the box closed.

How does that thing do with airport security? It looks like a bomb, except very pretty.

I've had no problems so far-- just drop the shoulder bag on the security conveyer and I it x-rays ok -- so far I've never been asked to open the bag.

I have no ill intentions to your music hardware, but I honestly have a serious urge to see what that box would look (and smell) like on fire.

Beautiful box, definitely like the look of it.

I think it would've been just as awesome for you to get some family members' faces engraved on it. Or your own (narcissistic maybe, but who cares?).

Really, as long as Michael Jackson's (present day) face didn't end up on it, it'd still look great.

I have a hard time figuring out why you didn't just plug the Sleek wireless directly into the line-out of the iPod...

WOW, that is a nice looking box! If I am the security at the airport I would ask you to open up the bag just so I can see it up close haha

Yeah, I totally agree... The amp is only boosting a signal that will go through the air anyway

this.

it's an interesting idea, but the way you're using it, it's pretty pointless. if you were using wired headphones, it would make a lot more sense.

Simple, and the reasons are two.

One, when you use the line-out you lose volume control, and the default level is deafening.

Two, the Corda amp doesn't just boost the output, it improves it, for example by adding filtered crossfeed, a highly desirable feature when you're using in-ear headphones.

Remember, the Sleek W! is just transmitting the output, and if the output is improved, what you hear is improved as well.
