Difficult Time Finding Right HeadRoom Model For Me

I have a set of HD 580s I've had for well over a decade, and I like them very much. I bought a HeadRoom Bithead, which I also like pretty well. I really do prefer the HeadRoom filter, and it just makes sense to me that it's worth altering the signal for this purpose.

I'm thinking that I can spend ~$500 on a headphone amp (new or used) and maybe $250-$300 on a DAC. I don't care about the size, as this unit will just sit on my desk at work. What do you think I should consider buying? I've been searching around the FS forums, Audiogon and eBay and haven't found anything that seems to fit the bill, but I may have missed something or don't know what I truly want.

Thanks for any thoughts!

Hi, the first time i listened to the total airhead which was my first headphone amp ,i was amazed. i couldnt think the sound can go much higher than that.
after some time i decided to upgrade my amp to a higher level so i bought a ultra micro amp and i now can say for sure that after lots of money spending and investigating headphones and related products like headphones amp etc. i have reached my heaven(at least for time being...).
the ultra micro amp is simply AMAZING . and not cost too much also.
i think its the best you can get for this price. its excelent with any headphones i tried it with: hd595,denon ah-d5000,shure earphones,pk1,....you name it. i dont think i will someday go any higher also because the price and because i dont think my head will demand any more high end than that! again... simply amazing performance from such a convienient and small amp! thank you headroom and good luck schalliol with your future amp.

You can get the Micro Amp and DAC together within your budget for a major upgrade from the bithead sound.

However for $1k you can get the Desktop amp with home module and home DAC which is a big improvement in SQ for the money. It's also a nice 1-box solution.

Depends what you absolute bottom line is.

If it's going on your desk at work, the Micro stack is great and well worth considering.

Great ideas, which I just considered to...

Pick up Thread's Ultra Micro Amp plus add an Astrodyne power supply. Yay! Now I've got to figure out what to do about the DAC... To stay clear in discussion, I'll open a new thread to discuss the Micro DAC vs. other DACs.
