I REALLY am lusting to hear the original. I love the Rimsky-K version but always found it a bit tame.
This is a great disc (It may be OOP, but I just saw it on Amazon for $7):

It's on RCA -- # 61354

Edit: It doesn't have Pictures at an Exhibition ; it has excerpts from other of his works.

I think the Penguin Guide awarded this CD a Rosette a couple of editions ago.

I have that Oue version and I think it is excellent. Unfortunately, it is also the only version that I have ever heard.

Since my last post, I reviewed my performance, which is on Col Odyssey, coupled with the Szell of the Ravel Orch: Pictures.
Seeking the Philips, I found it at two sites, both of whom were asking ~$49.!!
I am hoping you can suggest a more reasonable source?
Thanks, Odi. /\oo/\

BTW, for a good tip, check my reply to Czilla in "Just bought some XRCDs".

It is a totally random version, but I really like the Janos Solyom version for solo piano. Amazon has it, but it is a special order. Some small label. I would love to hear the Richter though as he is my favorite pianist. I love the live Russian recordings...all the coughing and spurting makes me feel like I am back in Yaroslavl in the concert hall. Nothing like a heady, tightly packed concert hall filled with people who really care about music listening to their nation's music played by their countrymen...after a great performance you are sweating, grab your extra heavy coat and pour out onto the street, the whole crowd steaming in the chill air, the frost crackling under your boots. It is heaven.

Almost, but not quite. When I located it there, alas, it was on back order. No stock. Then when I was looking around, their Mx man put up a warning to logoff, as they were undergoing Mx at 0200 PST. }^:

It's now about 4 hrs later and I just returned from the Wal-Mart site, and I'm happy to report that they are back in stock, and I have it on the way. Thanks again for that tip. Decent place to shop. {^;
