I haven't compared them myself but I had my marantz hooked up to hydra via top shunyata power cord and this gave it huge improvement - my friend who owns hydra said that he compared quite a fev power conditioners and hydra was significantly better than his previous top of the line accuphase

conclusion is quite simple - hydra is THE conditioner despite the fact that it doesn't have almost anything inside - might be one but... - He uses quite powerfull speaker amps and difference bettwen accu and hydra might be so significant because hydra was much more "power efficient" + HE has CLEAN separate power line for audio room so his rig didn't benefit from accuphase as much as it would in somebody else's house

everything depend - if You use speakers I would go for hydra if not I would put into consideration PPP - but I cannot answer what is better - actually at the moment I'm considering the same thing and cannot decide what is better for me

I use the Ps Audio PPP (black pearl) and it is amazing. The clean wave feature is very cool. The fact that it regenerates power rather then just filters/cleans/conditions would put it in a different category then the Hydra. I've owned 2 Monster upper end conditioners and had, on loan for 7 months, a custom 7k power conditioner from a respected audio designer and the p3 is worlds better! The ability to have those "magical" late night listening sessions, when the power in the neighborhood is cleaner, is now available anytime of the day with the PS Audio p3. Highly recommended!

I'll toss in my 2 volts here on the subject

I used to own a Hydra 6. It was fairly good in spite of not much being inside it.

When I simplified my system I used an Audience aR1p with a PS Audio Juice bar (which is just a power distribution box).
It was better than the Hydra.

I had the idea to add a second aR1p to one of the outlets on the Juice bar, and then plug my CD player into that.
Big improvement in soundstage.

That got me thinking...
The Audience aR6 and aR12 had even better filtering as well as having all the outlets isolated from each other.
I took the plunge and ordered the aR6.

OMG!
What a big improvement in almost every area!
And... it didn't choke my amps. Every other conditioner/filter I ever tried always seemed like it was throttling back my amp, and I ended up plugging them directly into the wall, but not the Audience units.

Yes it's expensive, but the aR6 about the same price as the Hydra 8.
The aR6 & aR12 also come with an Audience Power Chord, so take that into consideration.

Did you find the aR1P to soften the sound a bit?

are there any difference about sound quality between the ar6 and ar12 besides the number of outlets?

so if my system is headphone, then the ar6> ppp > shunyata??

Don't forget dedicated power lines, ideally one per device, with 4mm2 wires for power amp(s). It's HUGE!!!!!!!!!!

You can also add Richard Gray filter(s) to your classic filter(s). Especially efficient on power amps.

I think they are the same apart from the number of outlets.
