Westone 3 Impressions Thread - Page 110

Budgetboy, Yes, the issue occurs when I try to take the Shure olives off.  One solution I found was to use a threading tool from the hardware store to give the inside of the tip a spiral groove so the tips can be "unscrewed" from the IEM nozzles.  This improved the situation.

Then I switched to Comply tips since they fit me better.

I haven't heard of any way to purchase a selection of the Shure tip sizes.  I'd start with the medium, then see if you need the larger or smaller.

That seems like a bit of a hassle, I'll see how this new batch of complys stay on, and try the olives if the problem persists.

If your going to get a headphone amp with the W3s, get one designed specifically for IEMs like the RSA Tomahawk.

Thanks a lot budgetboy that link was helpful.

On a side note, I no longer use comply foams or shure olives. I use shure's triple flange tips with a bit of the stem cut off. To me they provide the best sound compared to the stock tips and olives that I've tried. With the olives I found the treble to be too harsh and sibilant. With the triple flanges modified into dual flanges, the treble was less sibilant than the olives but still sibilant nonetheless. The bass was also toned down a lot. With the triple flanges with just a bit of the stem cut, I found the treble to be just right, not sibilant, not harsh but almost in line with the mids (treble and bass are slightly more forward than mids). The bass also comes alive (mid-bass hump not apparent like they were with large complys), and I can now hear the bass that I had expected from the W3s, plentiful in quantity depending on the song and detailed and quick yet has the visceral sub-bass rumble that most BA drivers lack. Still not comparable to dynamic drivers (such as IE8 or MTPG) but I found them to be in between dynamic and BA drivers.

i do enjoy the w3's but have a problem with tips....i like the comply tips but they constantly come off when i remove the w3 from my ear.....the w3 has a shorter nozzle and is difficult to keep the tip on....on the other hand the shure olives stay on quite nicely but dont fit my ears properly....it would be perfect if i could get the fit of the comply's with the ability of the olives to stay on the nozzle snuggly

The triple flange didn't work out too well? I found the ones it came with a little too small to form a good seal. I'm sorry to hear that it keeps falling out, I didn't experience this so far with the comply tips.

Was looking for some headphones, was originally going to get the Jh13/16 but push came to shove and I'd rather spend that money on my gf, that being said I went on a search for universals for my Cowon J3 like chromatic, and ended up deciding on the w3 based on my readings. Just as I was about to order from the site saw the LE for the same price decided to pick it up cause I'm a sucker for LE junk. Anyways, is there any major/sonic difference between the LE and the regular w3s.

From my understanding there is no sonic difference just a difference in color (orange instead of red) and comes with extra goodies.

NOOOOO! after a very long life and no real problems, one earpiece is cutting in and out with cable movement.. I'll send an email to see if they're still under warranty..I think i recall registering them online to extend the warranty to 2 years.. but even then I might be out of warranty...

If it's expensive to get them fixed.. has anyone ever tried to recable these?

you might want to look into a custom reshell, cost of impressions (I got $60 as my best price)  plus $80

or you can contact westone and if you can't get a replacement find out if you can get the plug reterminated since that's usually the case if sound is cutting in and out.

I GOT MY WESTONE 3 !! :)

So i burned them in for now around 20 hours and then i listened to them...

My first impression with my iPod Touch 4G and ALAC files is that the sound most of the time is very enjoyable, the stereo image is nice.

Its enjoyable but i feel maybe the sound is a bit too much on the warm side, High are good in fact but the medium to me seem not enough foward.... that plus the Bass that is a bit too much and it give globaly a warm sound... its not a bad point, at least its really not agressive and i feel i could listen to them for many hours...

Most of the time the global balance is very good but sometime the bass is too much and the vocals dont come through as it should...

As you know the ipod dont have much eq but i might try the "POP" one as it seem to take of a bit of bass and add a bit of medium...

At first i tried them with the comply foam but i switched for the black plastic tip and it did help a bit with medium and took of a little bit of bass but still i have a bit of mixed feelings about the W3... i wonder if an amp like the iBasso T3 could maybe help to make the bass less foward, more tight and the mid a bit more foward as the "probleme" might come also from the iPod, not sure they go well together....

One really cool thing about the W3 for me is that they are really confortable !

I wonder if i had to take the Shure 535 instead... i had the 530 foe some days in the past and i liked it this time there was just a bit not enough bass lol where is the perfect balance ? lol

Maybe some had the same feelings as me ? its not that i dont like the sound of the westone 3 but i feel there is just a bit too much bass and not enough details in the medium...very often the vocals feels like it would need 2db more maybe after some more hours sound will change a bit ? not sure...

i didnt listened enough to them yet i think... its just a first impression, on some albums the sound is really perfect and exiting... and on some others i feel the bass is a bit too present and the vocal a bit far, it depend very much of the mix of those albums,  but i need to get used to the w3 also too probably...

if you have some advice about tip (now iam using the black one as i said) or about amp especially if you had the same feelings as me, dont hesitate to tell me :)

Just got a reply from Westone.. aparrently they dont repair these. but can offer a discount to $200 on a new pair.. hmm

That custom recasing is starting to look pretty good now.

Seems I registered my first pair of 3's when I got them, but forgot to register this pair which were themselves warranty replacements. That'll teach me. Thankfully I remembered to register my ES3X.

Buffalowings.. who did your custom reshell?

The cable movement that causes the cut out is where the cable enters the earpiece itself, not by the plug, or I'd terminate it myself.

I'm pretty sure cracking the 3 open to get to the wires would destroy them :(

So I have had the W3 for....ummm i think 7 months now? Idk but anyway!

We all know it has a mid bass hump. Well I was listening to Dir en grey's new single, Lotus,(released today!) and it takes full advantage of it! All the songs on the single seemed to have been tuned for the W3. If you like Metal, I highly recommend you check out Dir en grey's Lotus and the Obscure(Lotus version, they remade it!) from that single.
