diference of IMOD and IPOD by look

I recently purchased an IMOD 5G. I used an IMOD cable for it and it sounds pretty good, but the IMOD has no Red Wine Audio logo on the back as I have seen in others' pictures. I am wondering if there are other ways to tell if it is really an IMOD? Thanks

Try to plug something to the headphone jack.
If it works, then it is not iMod.

I believe the 5G/5.5G iMod retained the function of the headphone out.

If it's a 5/5.5g and you have a multimeter and a normal (non imod) dock cable measure the voltage in Mv between left or right and ground on the jack - if there are no caps it's modded and will read about 200mv. If it's only around 20mv it's standard.

Hope you have the tools required to check

Measure DC voltage on the dock connector pins 3 and 4 to pin 1 or 2. If it's 1.5V, it's a diyMod / iMod, if it's 0V, it's not modded.

That way shouldn't work. Unlike the 4th Gen iPod, the 5/5.5th don't have headphone out terminated.

You could just email RWA and check if they ever sell any without putting the label on - I doubt it the entire point is probably to prevent people selling regular ipods as imods. I think you were cheated if it was recently and you payed with paypal you might still be able to put in a claim etc.

Are you selling the iMod G5, or are there a different reason why this is posted in the For Sale/Trade forum?

The only way to check just by looking would be to disassemble the whole ipod (as the mod is hidden on the clickwheel side) and look for a wire between near the top right and bottom left of middle. Should be quite obvious once you get it opened up. That would probably void the warranty if it is a true RWA imod, but if it was DIYed you've got nothing to loose. There are many videos around showing how to replace the clickwheel so just follow one of those.

Good luck

Another easy way to try it :
plug the "imod" with an regular lod cable(without caps) on your headphone amp.
Turn the volume knob.
Normaly, you'll heard some cracks noises witch are the result of DC curent in the signal path.
After that try it with the Imod lod cable, if crack noises aren't there, it's OK, you have an Imod.
Hope it's helpfull.

That's not an easy but dangerous way.
You may damage your amp if using a normal lod.

Thanks for all the kind suggestions. I was on travel for the past week and only had a few minutes everyday for internet, so I did not check back soon. I will buy a cheap multimeter since I may need one eventually. I will report back.

The buyer claimed it is RWA IMOD. maybe I can check the serial no. with RMA.

I was in a hurry to post. I meant to post in the equipment forum, but post the thread here in FS forum. Sorry about that!

This is the best way and safest way. A lot of other suggestions here may break equipment or are false indicators.

Its the left side. Apple iPod and iPhone dock interfaces pinout and signals @ pinouts.ru

Take a look at the picture in the top right of that page to help.
