Why can't you wash and reuse etymotic filters...

I am thinking of buying ETYMOTIC canalphones but I can only buy from people who are selling because there are no dealers in Mississauga. I CANNOT BUY ONLINE AND GO OUTSIDE OF MISSISSAUGA. There is this local seller selling with the filters but I was wondering if I would be able to wash and reuse the filters... (ER6i) because I cannot buy the filters (can't buy online) if I need more.

i dont really know, ive never had to change a set to be honest but an educated guess would tell me once those filters are used and tampered with they dont have the same acoustic qualities as a new set.

but yeh id love to know if somebody knows for a fact why you cant wash em. im just guessing.

unless they have a paper lining of some sort, ive never actually looked at one close up

I've read that some wash the filters in hydrogen peroxide and reuse. I've never tried this. I recently changed my ER4 filters after 18 months use and I heard no difference.

If the ER6i's filter is identical to the ER4P/S, you can not remove it without using the tool since it is inside and using the tool essentially pierces the filter. So you have to clean it while it is inside it.

Just clean the outside, i usually wipe them (but i guess that would smudge the wax all over it :P) unless there is something that can remove wax on the surface of those filters... would be a much better choice.

Also i dont need to change these filters at all. Albiet i do micro ear cleaning before i put them in anyway, just the ear canals.

If the sound is acceptable then you dont need to change them only when details seems to be blocked then you need to change them but try to clean them first on the surface.

First of, besides ER6i, all Etymotic filters (of other models) can't be easily removed from the nozzle without damaging it, which means cleaning is out of question.

Second, thanks to ericj's experiment, ER6i's filter (which can be easily removed with just fingertips) is wash-and-reusable. Remove the filter and submerge it in pharmacy grade (mostly 5~10%) peroxide solution for 15 minutes or so than rinse with water. Allow the filter to air dry and replace it back to the nozzle. Enjoy.

Sorry, i know this is kinda off topic but i live in Mississauga too and am interested in a vendor selling ETYMOTICS. I can't seem to find them anywhere. Can you tell me the store? In the case that it's a person, nvm.
