which is prefered? any one able to compare? and how long have the 271's been available?

the akg is a nicer phone, but the ultrasone comes in an ultra-low radiation model, which sets it apart from every competitor.

lower radiation model? what does this mean? and what model are you talking about? and can anyone describe the sound differences? i like detail and a prominent bass.. but i also like the highs and mids to be proud of themselves.

For Accuracy: HFI-650 without any doubt. Much better low level detail, tighter bass, better isolation, much more extended high frequency response and detail. This is my current analyzer phone top reference.

For musical pleasure: AKG-271 without any doubt. More liquid, less sibilant, easy going and easy on your head (less clamping force, less sweat, less head band hurt). This is my current closed enjoyment phone, although I don't consider it to be reference quality (there are *many* others I have not heard, so take my words with a grain of salt).

That's my humble opinion only though, based on having listened to both extensively on Meier-Audio PreHead with ART DI/O and RME DIGI 96/8 PAD as sources.

Halcyon

I concur with what Halcyon said, except that I think the AKG K271 S isolates a tad better. Just my honest opinion. Comfier too!

Well it depends what you want. Unfortunately, you cant get the best of both worlds unless you go for Etys and they work for you.

If you want comfort and musicality, then go for the AKG.

If you want slightly better accuracy, balance and presentation and are willing to sacrifice a tiny bit of isolation and a fair amount of comfort, then go for Ultrasone. Keep in mind though that I'm not saying the AKG doesnt have these qualities; just that the Ultrasone has just a slight edge over the AKG's (which are still very good in these areas.)

Its really up to you though.

Hope that helps.

oh.. i guess the ultrasone is much more detailed.

The difference in base is very subtly between the two phones. Almost indistinguishable unless you listen hard. The AKGs sound slightly deeper and slightly less clear. Its extremely difficult for me to answer when you ask "How much." For me, its hardly noticeable and during casual listening, I cant really tell the two apart.

I have the DVD edition however. I've never heard the Trackmaster edition. However, according to several impressions made by others, the Trackmaster will not go as deep but will be clearer and more detailed. Its slightly more balanced as well. The difference between the two versions of the 650 are quite significant however (enough so that you can hear it easily) so you may find it helpful to read up more on some comparisons and decide which you will prefer. That is if you end up going with Ultrasone. A good comparsion was written by Jan Meier here.

what would happen if i upgraded the cable on the akg?
I havent got the faintest idea.

Merton, I can some it up for you by simply reading the posts:

AKG and 650 DVD - similar, deep deep bass

650 Trackmaster - also deep bass, more analytical.

No one's changed the AKG cable.

My subjective and very briefly based opinion is: Good source seems to balance hfi-650 DE somewhat.

The comfort can be make better by getting some beyer velours, If you feel the clamp is problem, pull the headband big, but the phones to your head and tighten while theyre in youre head.
