Mahler Symphonies Favorite Recordings - Page 6

Dark Angel: think zanders 9th is one of his best and can hold its own with any other. the sound is stunning clean bass silky strings etc.
B. walters titan is in mho without equal. I have the old LP and haven't heard the cd if available. But like many columbia LP's the sound is a little bright. nothing in those days could compare to the RCA living stereo lps for sound

There is also a Mahler 4th by Reiner on Rca which I think is the best.

I personally think the Renier/RCA Living Stereo Mahler 4th CD is in the top 5 versions for sure, right now I must rank Szell/Sony my first choice though......but they are close.

I only have 3 Mahler 9ths:
Karajan/DG
Bernstein/Sony
Baribolli/EMI
so I could probably use a modern version of 9th, especially if it is single CD version.

About Bruno:
I have the Walter/Sony 1&2 CD set and much prefer the sym 1 to the sym 2 which was too relaxed for my tastes........have to relisten to Walter's sym 1 again to see what its rightful place is among other versions of symphony 1

Arzela
Yoel Levi is current conductor Atlanta Symphony Orch..........Telarc records a lot with Cincinnati & Atlanta Orchestras.

how is the sound on the szell M. 4th? I have seen a few reissues of szell on SACD.

Don't have SACD, for CD version it is not SOTA sound but still hold up very well..............not quite as good as Reiner/RCA for instance which is about same vintage, but still doen't surrender much to modern DDD versions soundwise. Love the performance, especially the 4th movement "childs view of heaven" theme.

Mahler / Klemperer Symphony No.2 'Resurrection'

Wow. I'm very new to classical music and I must say I'm here to stay. This recording is just awesome. Very powerful music with my D-5 / META42 / SR80. Thanks for the recommendation DA. Got this cd from amazon used for $7.29, almost mint condition.

Fractus,
that is a winner, sound is very good..........$7 for great Mahler 2 single CD version is super deal! I have also bought many used classical Cds from Amazon, they are usually in excellent condition since classical owners don't abuse Cds and are very careful handling them etc.

Whats next?
(like lay's potato chips, hard to have just one)

Tell me about it. This is one of my favorite threads lately. I've also gotten Jane Baker sing Mahler, and a few more en route:

No.9 EMI Classic / Barbirolli
Das Lied von der Erde / Klemperer
Symphonie No. 3 ยท 8 Lieder aus "Das Knaben Wunderhorn" / Rattle
Awesome! glad that you enjoy the CD, the music and the thread. Talking about Janet Baker, one of my favorite album of all times is "Elgar: Cello Concerto; Sea Pictures", with Jacqueline du Pre and Janet Baker performing, also by EMI. An excursion from Mahler here.

Enjoy,
W

Got some great music with your recommendations Wilson, so I'm going to try this one too. Some very good reviews for this recording. Thanks.

ok, i've read through the entire thread, and it's been a rather confusing journey to say the least.

but still, of course, enjoyable and above all, informative.

DA,

am i correct to say that these are your favourite versions of the 2nd and 9th?

2nd: Klemperer / Philharmonia Orchestra / EMI Great Recordings of the Century

9th: Barbirolli / Berliner Philharmoniker / EMI Great Recordings of the Century

Those are great versions but probably not my single CD desert island versions.

For Mahler 2 probably still stick with old warhorse Rattle/EMI overall but this is full price 2cd version vs mid price 1cd for Klemperer/EMI (there are many excellent Mahler 2's out there)

Best sound for Mahler 2 so far is Litton/Delos, although I just got Levi/Telarc which is supposed to challenge for best sound ever, we will see.

For Mahler 9 the crown still rests with Karajan/DG for me.

Get ready for the pain..........the preferred version is the newer live 1982 Karajan Mahler 9th, but it is full price 2cd.......... ouch!

The older studio Karajan version is on mid price 2CD set and is very nearly as good plus has additional vocal works.

thanks DA.

so to summarise, these versions:

2nd : rattle / city of birmingham orchestra / EMI

9th : karajan / berlin philharmonic orchestra / DG

many thanks.
