Grabbed a couple of these Tang Band 2" for $5 a pop today. While trying to determine the suitability of these as headphone drivers, it has become quiet apparent that a proper enclosure and placement will easily be 50% of the sound of the end product. After trying pseudo- k1000, open, and closed designs, it seems they would sound best k1000 style with a tuned enclosure in back with a bass port exiting right next to your ear. HAH...back to reality. I wonder if there is a good setup that offers the middle ground between using earpads and k1000 style.

Here's them installed in a recipe box with a port roughly tuned to 30hz till i figure something out.

I have assembled the housings and incorporated them into an old Grado headband for testing. Looks pretty cool so far though.

I have not found the ideal screen yet, but it shouldn't be too hard. I have just attached the drivers to the frame in the meantime.

Sound impressions: It's just fantastic. Definitely strong for classical or jazz, where detail and soundstage are very prominent. It sounds so much more lifelike than my other cans. Very airy and subtle details, but bass can still be very present and deep.

I have to use the software EQ but I will be building a low-pass filter to attenuate the higher frequencies. (from about 1kHz-20kHz). This is necessary to make the frequency response more balanced.

With a little tweaking, I see huge potential. In terms of design, they could easily be professional with a little bit of screening/housing although I have to say they look very cool as they are now.

Thanks for the link Nikongod. That's exactly the kind of low pass filter I had in mind. That site will be extremely helpful. I just need to find the right values to attenuate to the slope I want.

Hey, that's some nice work! I'm glad you posted photos.

If you're looking for screen, this place has a lot of varieties:

You could try stainless, copper or just about anything else. They'll send you sample swatches, which might be enough to cover these.

Will you do something like the Stax 4070 to cover the drivers or more like K1000 and 404 ?

Edit: Did you mention how much you spent on these ? If so I apologize for the stupid question.

As for how much I paid, it's a little hard to tell.

The drivers came from a beyer 770 and the headband from an sr60. Though the headband will likely be replaced with a custom one later on.

The housings were free, I cut them out on the waterjet at work (scrap material ftw). Though I did spend a lot of time designing them on CAD.

I guess I haven't really spent anything on these. Just stuff I have laying around. You can probably get drivers from Digi-Key or Mouser for less than 10 bucks each.

Very refreshing thread Punnisher! This project can't fail. Didn't cost you practically nothing and you have positive impressions from it. Very nice work so far and it can get only better!

/me think this design have a lot of potential.
Its probably all about finding the most suitable transducer, then build a nice housing around it.

Well considering how bassy and detailed the DX1000 driver is....

It could counteract the bass killing backwave that this style has. Potentially giving you the near detail and SQ of the K1000.

From what I hear about the dx1000, it might be as bassy as these 770 drivers are. Both are probably great for this project.

I'll be adding some dampening to the rear of these drivers to further control the diaphragm movement. Ultra deep bass does tend to become sloppy and deteriorate the rest of the spectrum. However it's not bad at all.
