Also, any volume control alters the stream. From there, it all depends on how it's done. But, does iTunes and the iPod support RG, or have their own implementation?
That's my point. All ReplayGain and MP3Gain does is a straight amplification of the volume, the only adverse effect it can have is the clipping. So as long as there's no clipping it isn't any different from the volume control in your ipod/foobar etc. There has been topics about the adverse effects of ReplayGain in the past, and quite frankly IMHO all those people who think the sound quality is affected is under placebo effect.

... which they should consider avoiding in favour of iVolume's ReplayGain implementation. Don't know whether it is worth paying for on a Win system though, I guess one could just use ReplayGain. It would be nice if there was a free ReplayGain for OSX, nevertheless iVolume is well worth the asking price.

Just curious, have any of you guys actually purchased iVolume, the Replay Gain software for iTunes? The trial version is very problematic for big libraries due to the window that pops up for a duration that increases each time. When it goes back to working it also skips ahead several songs for me. So for anyone that has a fully functional version, is it worth it?

Well, I did, obviously, including one paid update. I did not upgrade it to the latest version 3.0 though as I am fine with my 2.5.3 for now.

So then, it works well? Significantly better than Sound Check?

I never went back to Sound Check, as it used to kill the frequency response and make everything sound mushy. iVolume just works and only changes the volume, that was significantly better in my book. Even if Apple bothered to better Sound Check in the while, iVolume would have more features and flexibility.

Ok, cool. I tried Sound Check for a while but like you said, it made most songs sound mushy but made certain acoustic songs ridiculously loud.
