Well, this is a great piece of music imo... If you haven't heard it I can strongly recommend it. (I'm listening to it right now in fact... an old but good recording with Rostropovich.)

Yup, I like it too. I listen to Yo-yo Ma's most often.

I like Rostropovich's version too. I also like Jacqueline du Pre's recording, although her interpretation is totally different, the sort of passion and energy is very unique.

Enjoy,

I'm not familiar with Jacqueline du Pre's Haydn, need to check it out.

I like Rostropovich's too. He's more romantic, more lyrical, while Yo-yo Ma is more direct, more joyful, IMO.

I always choose Rostropovich if I can. He's just the best. Playing the Haydn cello concertos is like riding a tricycle for him...he just rolls through without any effort at all. Starker is good too, but I am not sure if he does the Haydn...I like his recordings of the Kodaly sonata most.

Gergor, if you check out the duPre work, try the CD (EMI) that has Haydn Concerto in C and Dvorak Cello Concerto that she recorded with Barenboim/Chicago Symphony. Her work on the Dvorak was very enjoyable.

I have all three. The duPre recording features a much larger ensemble over that of Ma's and Rostropovich's. The Rostropovich is recorded in a smaller and more lively venue, and the detail that comes through reflects that. Ma's version is more lighthearted and whimsical. Look at his facial expression on the jacket. It matches his playing.

I personally prefer Haydn to be played this way. . However, Rostropovich's playing has more poise, that'd probably appeal more audience.

BTW, my Yo-yo Ma's Haydn CD has an issue: One channel is louder than the other for about 30 second in the middle of the first track. Does anybody else has the same problem? If it's just a defective CD, then I'd go and buy a new one. I'm afraid that it's from the recording itself.

I agree, Rostropovich is the master. I'll check my Ma CD, but offhand I can't recall any such anomolies.

Yes, please check for me. I appreciate it. It could very well be just a defective CD I have. Unfortunately I have a number of early Ma's CDs that have issues. The Haydn CD is one (unbalanced channels for a short time), the Dvorák CD I have has cracking sound....

If your CD is fine, I think I'll just buy another copy. Thanks!

I only have experience with Rostropovich, so obviously I am bias toward him. Yeah, I like his version a lot, very vivid and delightful.

Your system is probably just to good... Perhaps it reveals even the smallest flaws... I'd like to have a perfect, analytical setup someday...

pigmode (or anyone who has the Yo-yo Ma's Haydn),

the defect happens on track 1 around 3:45 to 4:25. Both channels are muffled, with right channel more serious than the left. Thanks for your help.

Me, too. Let me put in another vote for the Du Pre. That EMI disc (with the Dvorak) is wonderful.

M. Rostropovich is, indeed, the master of the Dvorak, but I give the Hayden to JdP.

And the Ma? I never drop it in the CDP any more...What with the aforementioned two recordings, who needs to.

Isn't JdP's Haydn unique? No one played that piece with such emotion and energy.

On Du Pre's Dvorak Cello Concerto, Du Pre recorded one with Celibidache/Swedish Radio Symphony and another one with Barenboim/Chicago Symphony. I found that the Barenboim(EMI) recording better.
