Headphone FAQ additions?

Thread Starter
OK, since Headfiers have recommended some phones that I left off the list, I think we should make additions democratically.

I will start with a few phones, and hope you guys will suggest phones to add to this list if you feel that I've left some important contenders out. PLEASE LIST categories that the phones fit in, and why they should be added. Just because you like them doesn't mean they should be added. They should be phones that are recommended any time someone is looking for a certain type of phone (closed, gaming, etc)

REMEMBER THIS:
The purpose of the FAQ is to help answer Headfier's questions about what headphones to choose. We see tons of threads asking "Best $100 phones," "Best CLosed phones," "Best Portable phones"....and there are hundreds of phones out there, with as many personal recommendations as there are people.

However, this FAQ is really only here compile and list the recommendations that are given over and over again. Imagine that you yourself were looking for a pair of closed cans, for instance. Wouldn't you like to see a list of the phones that others recommend time and time again to help narrow down your choices or give you specific names to research. Just because the V700 is closed, doesn't mean we should list it, however.

thanks for your input. Current and future headfiers will reap the benefits of our work.

Headphones: Koss Portapro
Category: Portable and Sub-$100
Why: The Portapro is king of the cheapies. For $50 or less, you can have one of the best portable headphones out there. If you replaced all the packaged stock headphones in the world with Portapros, it would start a headphone revolution once they found their way into people's homes. They're simply amazing for the price. I can't recommend a better upgrade from stock headphones.

They hold up well to use and abuse, are very comfy, and have a fun, enjoyable sound that is sure to ensare any newbie. Highly recommended for movie watching. They fold up and are easy to carry around in the little Koss bag they come with. Very easy to drive phones as well. I often think that half the people that come to this site would call it quits with the Portapros if they got them right off the bat. With their conventional over-the-head headphone design, many people will find the Portapros' style and fit more to their liking that of the vaunted KSC-35's. Portapros are also much, much more widely available than the KSC-35's.

I personally like the KSC-35's more than Portapros, but by no means should Portapros be excluded from this list. Portapros are recommended just as much by others as are KSC-35's

perfect response Rizumu.

damn, writeups like that are the perfect mini-review (with maybe a bit more on sonic qualities). while not everyone may agree, that description seems totally fitting for a a separate FAQ thread with mini-reviews on the headphones.

awesome

Suggestion, since you asked: ER-4 MICRO-PRO™ EARPHONES
They are listed under headphones.

Wow, a comprehensive headphone FAQ.

nanahachi & Duncan, I have to salute your effort and commitment for what must surely be a daunting undertaking!

Since these are "early days" I thought I'd suggest that if at some point this project becomes overwhelming due to its shear scope you might want to consider appointing a team of "specialist" advisory commissioners along the lines of the popular product manufacturers. These in turn could then independently solicit and/or edit input from the general membership on the basis of their speciality. For example:

AKG
Audio-Technica
Beyerdynamic
Etymotic Research
Grado
Koss
Philips
Sennheiser
Shure
Sony
Stax
Ultrasone
Anyhow, just a thought.

In any case you've already earned my respect merely by beginning what has literally never been done before!

I'm not familiar with exactly what this FAQ entails , but I think you must have the HP1000 in there. First, you should explain the difference between the three models (HP1, HP2, HP3), and also explain that they are discontinued, but favored over the current Grados by most people.

good idea radrd, but that should prob be in another FAQ type thread. perhaps a Grado FAQ. similarly, maybe a Senn, Beyer, etc FAQ could be made, discussing only the phones made by each manufacturer, and including mini reviews about those phones

Click HERE to see the FAQ in question.

EDIT:
see Duncan's post below. Travelite, I too agree that you have a great idea there. however, i feel like that would require even more effort and more ppl helping out. again, i like the idea, so maybe one day we can do something like that.

TravelLite...

Sounds like a good idea... would save poeple being unfairly biased AGAINST certain 'phones...

Depends if anyone is up for the idea...

Well, of course I have to give a nod to the Philips HP170s, the only good inexpensive ($20) closed headphone on the market, as far as I know. Not many people have them around here (they're pretty new and below the radar of your average head-fier), so they probably won't garner too many votes, but the sound is very well balanced and easy on the ears, they are wonderfully comfortable, and they're great for long term listening with moderate isolation. For purposes of musical enjoyment, they hang out in the same neighborhood as the Sony V6s and D66 eggos, IMHO.

Early Results:
  • * Portapros have seen a large number of recommendations, so they should make it into the FAQ.

    * The KSC-50 will be noted next to the KSC-35 as an alternative.

    * The Sennheiser PX-100/200 will be entered under "portable."

    * The R10 and HP-1000s will probably fit into a category of "Amazing yet Elusive Hifi" aka "$$$$ dynamic phones."
Electrostats: I really need help here guys. No one recommended any specific models of Stax or reassons why. The Omega IIs are godly, IMO, so they may go next to the R10 and HP-1000, but if we are going to have any Stax as being COMMONLY RECOMMENDED electrostats, I really need to know which ones. I will try to do a search for Stax and see which ones keep coming up, but I would really appreciate some help.

Thanks everyone for voting

is the poll open-ended? ie, can you vote more than once? after all, if you make changes, can we? perhaps a mechanism to wipe the previous results and have people vote again?

wally, i'll have to ask Duncan. so far I havent made any changes, but if I do, perhaps we should do as you said, and wipe the results and start anew?

i really dont know. If people provide more phones to add, then I'll see if we can throw them into the mix

good thinkin! thanks
