I haven't really compared these 2 items because they really are totally different beasts for different functions in my portable arsenal:

Fiio E3 ~ I normally used this with my iPod Shuffle 1st Gen prior to my iPhone. As there is no volume control on the Fiio E3, you would not want to use it out of the line out of your source ~ this is why I primarily used it with the Shuffle as it has no line out, only the headphone out which would mean I can still use the device to control the volume. The Fiio was a neat little toy and definitely gave more UMPH! to the Shuffle which had already sounded great (best sounding apple headphone port until iPhone 3G came along IMHO) While the Fiio fattens the bass a bit and provides more power, it does not really do much to make the sound better... other than it being louder and with more bass.

Xin SuperMcro IV ~ SuperMicro has a volume control so I have used this normally with my sources that I can get line level out from (computer, iPod, iPhone -> Line Out -> SuperMicro) and almost every headphone I own. This little guy not only packs a ton of extra UMPH regardless of what source or headphone it is paired with, it also makes the music sound so beautiful. The highs get so crisp but not tinny or shrill, and the bass tightens up big time, and gets some extra SLAM! The bass is definitely not as 'flabby' as the sounds from Fiio and on the highs... Fiio can't touch it at all...

Hope this helps.

well I only got them today! but yeah, I will be using them like that. I have been using ESW9s until now as my portable phones. I only really use my portable music player when on long train journeys which I tend to go on when I visit friends in different parts of the UK, and keep it all in my bag. I wouldn't use them for walking around a city centre, I don't trust the public, hah.
