Question about newly purchased HD 650

I just recently received my new HD 650 purchased from jr.com and while looking them over i popped off the earpad and noticed that the black markings on the silver membrane underneath the earpad were highly faded/discoloured. I have seen pictures of this interior on other forum posts when indicating how to tell if the headphone is the "new" 650 and the black lines are always very solid and bold. I was wondering if there is any reason to be concerned about this, or if this is entirely inconsequential. I can not say I have noticed too much regarding poor sound playback thus far, but i have occasionally heard strong clipping that i attributed to the source. Part of me is just a bit paranoid that I was sold either a used item advertised as new, or possibly a poorly manufactured item. Thanks in advance for any help and advice.

welcome to head-fi and the can looks fine...sometimes there is slight heterogeneity in the various manufacturing processes...plus, i have dealt with jr b4 and they are pretty reliable dealers (iow, if it was labeled new, its new)

as for the clipping, open your wallet and say ahhh

J&R won't screw you, don't worry. I can't view the pic right now (web filtering at work), but I'll check it out later. The lightness/darkness you're describing from other posts could be due to people's cameras, but even if not, I wouldn't worry about it. As for clipping - these phones are very power hungry...if your source is not up to snuff, you're going to clip and also get sub-par sound. What are you using?

Thanks for the quick responses. It is not a camera issue, as the black lines themselves are faded and appear as if an eraser has been taken to them. Once again, I have no idea if this actually affects the sound whatsoever, but i figured I should certainly ask during the time period in which exchanging them is relatively simple. Regarding power, I usually use my 700W receiver to power them (i know not a dedicated headphone amp) but the large clipping was heard while playing a game on the computer with the headphones connected straight to the sound card. Hence I was fairly certain it was just my source in that case. I always feel it is better to be safe than sorry and get as many opinions as I can regarding something I am unfamiliar with. Thanks for the responses and keep em coming if anyone has further info.

"Look, Watson, a clue!"

"Oh, my, it appears so, Mr. Holmes..."

I don't think a soundcard is going to do much (if anything) for the HD650s. They are very power hungry. The only thing I ever plug into my soundcard is earbuds, and that's only because my soundcard has some cool virtual surround stuff for games.

Is there a "new" revision or something to the 650's?

This was starting to get a bit off topic, so I will just ask the one question I am not sure has been answered. Does anyone know what those black lines on the interior silver membrane do? Is there any reason whatsoever to be concerned that they are faded on a brand new hd 650? Thanks!

Just took a look at my pair of HD650s. They look faded in places too.

The material was probably bonded onto the frame using some type of epoxy and it just didn't soak all the way through the membrane material there, I wouldn't worry too much about it.

Thank you very much for the information. I was hoping this was the case. Sounds like I am probably fine then.
