Grado SR325i - How much burn-in time?

Hi All:

Just got my first pair of grado's and I do like them alot and do not regret the purchase. It is common knowledge that the 325i's have alot in the high end. It seems to spike alot depending on the music.

Does it "mellow" somewhat with burn-in time? If so about how many hours do they need to really experience a difference?

Thanks,

Brad

I'm skeptical about break-in, but even if it's all just placebo I could swear mine leveled off a bit after 10-20 hours. Also, though they sound certainly very good from a portable amp, the highs are also mellowed (or at least don't distort as much/show as much sibilance ) when run out of a properly-powered home amp. I noticed a huge difference in both detail and dynamics when I upgraded my Bithead to a Headroom Micro amp.

I'm not sure that the 325i's ever "mellow." They do sound better after 100 hours or so break in. I like their sound and find that the better my source and amplification, the better they sound. Some recommend tubes. I'm running mine through a McIntosh integrated. On the go, I use a Decware Zen Head and all is well.

Cheers!

Interesting

I'm using them off a iqube portable amp from my iphone 3g using an ALO Cryo "super expensive" LOD and I can definitely notice some sibilance. I hope they mellow somewhat however.

Two words: pink noise.

After 100 hours my 325i became sweet and beautifully balanced.

After 200 hours or so the bass kicked more ass and they are at a point where they're my favorite cans right now. They haven't changed sound signature in months. And I use them a lot.

Yup: pink noise (e.g. use Sheffield Labs XLO burn-in track) on cont repeat. For NEW cans, be gentle so as not to damage voice coil: med. volume for max 3hrs cont. Then rest ~1hr and continue for another few hrs. before rest. After NEW + 50 hrs., med vol. continuous operation is okay...ad infinitum.

The XLO CD has USEFUL demag tracks, too -- so run them 1x every 50 hrs (burning in or not) -- this helps ENTIRE audio chain, not just cans.
