I've never really had any issues soldering AKG drivers with the iron around those temps. They just require a bit more care than some other brands, particularly the ones using the loose/flexible solder tabs (K240 / K340).

Sure, easy the AKG master says. Wouldn't have an extra K340 driver around would you?

Nah... I think I sold the last spare K340 driver I had a few months ago.

I really have to second that. It's the same temperature i use to repair dkk32 k240 drivers that have a detached voice coil wire on one lug.

Ok, I have to find a half deaf relative to give my good KSC75 driver then

The other driver I ruined trying to solder the cables, guess the iron was too hot and the copper from the coil broke.

Or I'll just keep it as a spare...

MDR-V6

I haven't figured out what exactly went wrong, but one driver went dead immediately after replacing a worn cable. I keep the iron at about 500f. Maybe it was just a poorly timed coincidence. A full autopsy is in the works.

I broke a PX100 driver yesterday. Managed to pry one side out nicely, then the magnet snapped out of the voice coil housing while trying to remove the rear cup.

Had a few near misses with the IM716 too.

Not gonna lie... this thread kinda scares me since I'm going to be recabling vintage RS-1s soon

sr80's

still not sure exactly how it happened but i think i overheated one of the drivers either when i was heating up the cups to separate them or i held the soldering iron on for too long

i really miss them. on the bright side, i just ordered some sr325i's which should be here soon

I would highly recommend against it. The wood cups of the RS-1 Grado is very thin and delicate, so it's very easy to break. Do so at your own risk.

i got a pair for 20 bucks from newegg a while ago, and i wanted to get rid of the pod. i finally got a hold of the resistors, and tried to remove the pod over the last weekend. unfortunately, it didnt go as smooth, and i decided to recable the whole thing. sadly, i didnt know the wires inside the drivers were so damn fragile, way more fragile than some of the iem's that i've recabled in the past. one side is ok but the other side is completely fuxd.
it only cost me 20 bucks but still.. i really loved these iems.
to make myself feel a little better, i would love(?) to hear some of the horror stories about good headphones getting destroyed.
I'm about to do a iM716 recable so this seems pretty interesting... However, I don't understand exactly what went wrong. Could you be more specific as to what you destroyed? (It would be nice if you want you could refer to the pics in this thread.) Did you remove the "PCB" to solder the wires + resistor directly to the driver? Did this cause the driver to overheat and burn a wire?

I destroyed one of the driver of my KSC75 Somehow I held the solder tip too long and there was no sound That's was a 18$ lesson.

I decided I will probably have them sent to Grado and have a black dragon cable put on them.

2 new K340 dynamic drivers being shipped from Vienna for attempt #2.

It looks like I fried an iGrado driver. Wondering if there is a way to open the coil and look if this could still be fixed. Alternatively, if there is anywhere to get a single iGrado driver from cheap.
