Audio Technica Question - Page 2

If you're going to get some great amps like the Zana deux or ATH-HA5000. Then go for the W5000. If you dont plan on spending too much on your source and amp. Then I think its better you go for the AD2000. The AD2000 sounds wonderful straight out of my Sony A616

I have only heard the W5000 in less than ideal conditions. I think I will eventually be in the camp that will own both. I have been a long time owner of the AD2000 and love it. The sound is balanced and coherent coming out of the yammy, making small scale music just plain musical. The bass is one of the hardest aspects of this phone to discribe. It has bass quality in gobs, but it might be considered lean on some types of music. Classical I never wish for more, but for techno I would certainly agree its lean, and yet others think this is one of the best techno phones out there, because its so fast. I take the view that if the big bass is in the recording, it will come through on the phone. Unlike the post below, I don't see the AD2000's performance as below the W5000. They both offer different sonic packages. Fit issues, as mentioned above, are notorious with both phones.

yeah, the ad2k seem like a good fit now, but i like a neutral sound and the less than neutral midrange that people describe in the ad2k is the only thing preventing me.

Im listening to my ue-11s and i feel they are actually very neutral, except for the bass perhaps. They are a little senn 650ish but still not boomy and does not overpower everything else that often. The bass can be a little much for me sometimes.

The W5000 seems to be more neutral and thats what i want. Bass for me cannot be too strong. It still must have some impact but i care about the deepness and texture of it.

But i dont know, if everyone loves the midrange of the ad2ks then i might just have to get them. I want neutral and refined, but the W5000 seems really picky.

Man i really want to get the W5000s, but i cant justify it if it will sound just plain bad with my setup.

haha, maybe i should just go electrostat. Ive never heard anything from the likes of stax or the HE90/HE60. The HeAudio one also seems very interesting.

Couldnt justify that now though, ive never heard one so im not going to purchase in the dark.

Someone said that the W5000s bass has an almost electostatic nature to it.

But what exactly does that mean? I have no idea....yet

But its appealing, becuase electrostats are know to be quite neutral.

well i think im going to just go with the W5000s, they cant be that bad with my iQube, and i will eventually upgrade.

So maybe i can post some impressions using the W5000 on a quality portable amp.

Can anyone comment on the isolation provided by the W5000s?

They look intriguing, but I really need good isolation and lack of sound leakage since I do 90% of my music listening at work.

How do they compare with the Denon D5000s or the Beyer DT770, for example?
