It is the natural oxidisation of the rubber. The only way to remove it is to use some kind of bleach agent - but any kind of bleach agent will eat into the rubber and harden it. In the end, you might have get a whiter q-JAYS but at the cost of the cable. I really won't recommend that.

Could I have prevented this?
Do you thing this could happen with a white m80?
Pretty good reason to buy a black version

No, nothing you can really do to stop it from happening, but sunlight, moisture and skin oil do hasten the process.

I owned these for half a year. This review is extremely overrating them. The only thing that is good about it is its highs which have great detail and clarity. Build quality is crap (the rubber at the end of each monitor deteriorates extremely fast and the nozzle started showing cracks after just 2 weeks) , microphonics are terrible, cable length is simply stupid, The soundstage is the narrowest i've ever heard,  mids are okay and i can't rate the low end as there was no low end.

I concur with this opinion completely. I haven't owned the q-Jays for about 3 or 4 years but the experience still leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Overpriced rubbish, and I had a woeful customer service experience when something went wrong in the right earbud after a couple of weeks of gentle use. Avoid!
