Balanced Max and the use of a Surge Protector

Yes or No? Pros and Cons? Ideas and theories.

I forgot to add in my previous post that I have my Transporter and Max Balanced Amp plugged into a Furman PST-8 D surge protector.

FurmanSound.com - Pro A/V Product - PST-8D

(I also plug my other Transporter, Bryston BP-26DA & Bryston 4B-SST into another PST-8 D).

I know this is always controversial, but for me, I just can't bring myself to plug this much expensive equipment directly into the wall without surge protection.

I chose the Furman primarily because they have good surge protection (with a warranty). It also has some other features that, in theory, should give a cleaner background (removing line noise, preventing ground contamination, keeping digital circuits separate). Haven't done enough with/without listening to comment on the effectiveness, though. Lastly I bought mine for $135, so in the world of power conditioning, this is not too bad.

The main downside of anything that is plugged between your equipment and the wall is that it can limit current draw. Seems that the design of the Furman shouldn't do this (and I'm guessing the peak draw of the Headroom Max Balanced Amp is nothing compared to what the peak draw of my 4B-SST is...).

I would love to hear what Tyrl & the Headroom folks have to say and whether they use any.

That's an excellent Idea. I think I will ask Tyrl at Headroom what he recommends. Scottsmrnyc

Here is a better question. Will using a surge protector and or a power line conditioner hurt in away the Balanced Max Headphone amp or for that matter any amp? I might be willing to sacrifice some sound quality for some peace of mind and investment safety.

No problem with surge protectors. Some might say it degrades the sound a bit ... meh. Really the way to do it is with a real line conditioner. I always use one when doing demos---every little bit helps.

What line conditioner do you use? Very curious. Any thoughts on what capacity is required to successfully feed the Max Balanced Amp?

Thanks,

Here's a blurb. It's an area where you can go pretty crazy, but I think one with an isolation transformer is the minimum if you're really going to do it right.

We use API equipment.
