SoundMAGIC PL30 impressions - Page 11

lewislink, Have you tried the Comply T500s with the PL30? I remember how comfortable the Comply's were on my UM2, but they seemed to darken the sound signature by sucking out the highs.

Yeah, I tried them, but I couldn't get a good enough seal with them because they're too short. I didn't determine the sound quality because of the lack of good seal. I went back to the OEM bi-flanges which are quite outstanding and better than UE bi-flanges. There's also some Head Direct RE2 bi-flanges that will be much better for deeper ears because they are much longer and larger.

Ok, thanks for the info. I felt like the included biflanges were too flimsy to create a good seal, but I may try them again.

Try out my method for obtaining and maintaining a secure fit and seal with silicone seals. It's the use of Witch Hazel extract, rubbing alcohol and cotton swabs.

You start by dousing a swab with Witch Hazel and swabbing the ears real good a few times. Then, when the ears are dry, swab them with the alcohol a few time to make them squeaky clean. Swab the sleeves too and once done, just put a little alcohol on the sleeves and in the ear...just enough to make insertion easier...and insert the phones and hold them in for a little while till they set up. If done well enough, when you remove them the sleeves will be so well sealed they will turn inside out.

Focalprice claims "Up to -20dB ambient moise rejection."
Does this seem about right?

I've seen some people say they don't isolate anywhere near as much as other IEMs, but how do they compare to closed cans or JVC marshmallows?

Hmm, mine were shipped out friday last week, so hopefully I get them by the end of this week.

Probably. -20dB is actually very little in the IEM world. Even CX300 or EP-630 should give you about -23~26db. Close cans, like Bose Quiet Comfort 2, are about -20dB.

That sounds like a LOT of extra work, particularly if you're on the road (not at home). I wonder if they're compatible with UE's biflange tips, since they would probably be better quality.

They are compatible. But the OEM bi-flanges are much softer and conform and stick better. The ear cleaning process isn't all that much work once a person gets accustomed to it and you don't need to do it all the time. The WH treatment is for the beginners who haven't ever done this type of treatment and for whenever the sleeves seem to not stick. Generally the rubbing alcohol is all that is needed most of the time. I just put a little bit on the sleeve and ear when I put the phones in and I'm good till I remove them.

Some members has asked how the pl-30 sound with the fiios amp. My amp has shipped today so in about 2 weeks I will let you know.

Can we see some pictures of the phones with the bass knobs removed? I want to see if they look ok like that. I have no plans to take mine off though, because I like them just fine right now.

Well I experienced the "fate" mod as well. I got curious and was switching the bass knobs back and forth, trying to spot the difference. Well, like it has been said, they are not very durable little things and one started to come off. I decided to just take it off to see what the difference was.

Here is the bad news, I don't like the change at all! The highs and mids have gotten terribly recessed. The balance is gone. The open hole may increase soundstage, but it is at the expense of the whole sound spectrum.

Case and point, I discourage anyone from messing with the bass knobs at all. I was perfectly happy with the "Clear Bass" setting that they come shipped with. I recommend everyone just pretend the knobs aren't there and enjoy the phones.

I contacted FocalPrice about a replacement. I hate to have to wait another two weeks or more, but what can I do. I tried to put the knobs back in, but it was a no go. Sad day...

HI: Sorry to hear you dont like the sound with the nobs off but I have a felling many other members will exsperance the FATE mod. I might be able to help you though. All you need to do is put a small piece of schotch or any other tape over the holes and you got the orignal sound back. You could also stuff some pad foam in the holes.
I tried stuffing a little toilet paper rolled up into the hole and things did improve. It was still much darker than before. The bass is a lot more bloated and "one-note". The highs remain recessed. I just hope I can get a replacement from FocalPrice.

So if any of you who have the pl-30s who have tried the Head Direct RE2, are the RE2s worth 4x the price or would I be safe with getting a pair of these?
