Can anyone tell me what type of speaker terminal this is? It's on the back of a Philips hi-fi.

Blurry ones?

Probably it was part of an integrated all in one "home theater in a a box" type unit...those have proprietary or non-standard connectors a lot of the time, so you end up needing to use the speakers that came with it. Just a guess, but that's what it looks like to me.

The EU in it's infinite wisdom decided a few years back that conventional 1/4" binding posts or even standard banana plugs were too dangerous for us so recently we have all kinds of b.s proprietry connectors vying to set a new standard...

Something was wrong with the old DIN speaker jacks? You could not even screw up the polarity with those...

These new things look too much like power cord plug-ins.

but at least its not as dangerous as them evil banana plugs that'll burn your entire city down just by existing

honestly looks like something off of an HTIAB or similar package

anything named after such a dubious fruit would be that dangerous, i mean, it looks like a gun right? and people slip on them,

Those are a variant on the car stereo sockets. Not a bad idea for El Cheapo equipment. For anything else, the banana plug is king.

Yeah they were a good design but seemed to die out with the advent of the fashion for fat Monster speaker cables in the 1980s. B&O still use them I think and I had to wire some up for a lovely old Tandberg I have recently so you can still get decent quality ones from a German firm called Preh. Not easy to track down or find suitable cabling for though.
