Steal of year...for me

So today I left work early cuz I wasnt feeling too well. When I got home, I decided to scour craigslist and see what kinds of stuff people had out there. I stumbled across some Klipsch Fortes for $200...called the guy and didnt get an answer so I left him a voicemail. After a couple hours of pacing thinking they were gone, he calls me up and I tell him Im on my way to get em. After I get off the phone, I travel an hour across town to the sellers house. I seen em in person and forked the $200 over rather quickly. He bought them brand new when he was 20 years old, his wife made him get rid of them. He had them in his basement for the last 10 years, never touched em. His wife said they were too big to use. I got the original owners manual and everything. They look brand spanking new...none of the rubber was dry rotted, the woofers are perfect, no scratches on the cabinet...perfect. Right now I have them hooked to my Kenwood KR9400 (vintage 1975) with my Xbox as the source streaming music from my desktop. It sounds great so far. I think a little later on I may hook my TA-10.1 and tube pre up to them and see how that goes. Im astounded at how cheap I got these for. I could easily get $400+ for em...no problem. Hell, I wouldve paid that for them in a heartbeat. Now I just need to finish up my headless Linux source .

When I got to the guys house to get em, he got 4 calls from other potential buyers. Theyre damn nice thats for sure, and such a balanced sound they give out.

That's great! Lets see some pics!

A while back I almost scored some La Scalas for $300. Going up there as soon as you can definitely pays off...

Ive been looking into the crossover upgrade since I got these. Ill have to wait a few weeks before I can get the new ones. Im loving these so far. Who knows of a decent tube integrated I can get to run these off of? I would like to go vintage if possible.

Those Xovers don't look very good. Inductors are placed at the worst possible position causing interference...Also...the caps are total crap...Bennic caps in an Xover costing $200?! Are you serious?! You could do better yourself...easy enough to build your own (or reconstruct the original ones).

The Sonicaps are not crap, he does offer little rebuild kits for a lot less, which basically the price of the caps, he does take recommendations and if you like you can send him your boutique parts and have him put it together for you, mind you not everyone here is a DIYer. He's got a niche thing going on, and well if you feel you can offer the same time and effort to some of the non-DIYer's here with better quality workmanship by all means have them contact you instead, i wouldn't hesistate, but i'm too busy with a 8-5 job, hehe just like most people here.

Bennic cap...

...see the similarities?

I swear, I can make a fortune soldering Xovers together...jeez.

I didn't mean the Sonicaps...just the Bennic I saw, along with the iron-core inductors and the incorrect inductor placing. I wouldn't know how much to charge for labour anyways...I do it because I like it...(I didn't take business...lol, cno clue about it).

Cheers, Brendan

The picture is so small; are those Bennic or Dayton caps?

Bennic and Dayton are the same thing...just surprised at the components used, that's all. Maybe it sound better with a Bennic cap...who knows.

The fun begins this week. I bought some Bob Crites crossovers and titanium diaphrams last night. The stock crossovers in the Fortes are garbage. Bob Crites makes the best crossovers around. Ive read nothing but praise about the new crossovers. Cant wait .

McIntosh MA5100 deal

Lovely deal on the Klipsch Fortes. I got my own sweet deal recently. I purchased a near mint McIntosh MA5100 integrated amplifier (paid 550 plus 25 for shipping--double-boxed, insured). It's jaw dropping good and has 2 headphone jacks! I was tempted by a pair of beautifully restored Klipsch Cornwalls, but I really don't need them (and they were going for 900 bucks, not an amazing 200 dollars like your deal).

Enjoy the new crossovers. You've just purchased an awesome pair of speakers.

Cheers!
