What are balanced transports???
well, since he is using a DAC, the CDP (im assuming he using CD's) that he is using would be considered a transport i believe, since he is bypassing the CDP dac thats built in.

It would be either optical or coxial output, from what I understand, "balance" starts from you souce which is your DAC, not your transport.

Sort of...I'm running this thru a computer rig now to listen to my wavs, flacs, and mp3's...

it goes like this

computer > firewire out > m-audio firewire audio in > 75 ohm spdif out > zu firemine > lavry UNBALANCED coax in > lavry unbalanced mode out > zu oxyfuel > earmax pro unblanced in > stock cabled hd650

BUT...with this little thingamajig (the new one at the bottom that says 110 ohm BALANCED), which i hope to get around christmas

Hagerman Technology LLC: HagUsb USB to SPDIF Audiophile Converter

then i'll have a blanced signal coming INTO the lavry as opposed to originating from the lavry

Long term, i'd also like to get a balanced tube amp and cans

You will have a digital signal coming into the Lavry which is neither balanced or SE if I am thinking right. The signal you have now if the Lavry is acting as a DAC, which it is, is a digital signal of some fashion. The HAGusb XLR is great but it will not do hi-rez as my M-Audio USB Audiophile does. Note my sig below for both the HAGusb and USB Audiophile.

interesting...so i would be better off keeping my m-audio firewire to be used as a conduit for digital sinal transmission to the lavry rather than getting a usb to xlr box??

this doesnt sound right cause everyone i have talked seems to suggest that going from the m-audio firewire box to the hagerman would be an upgrade, however slight....

The HAGusb may very well be better but if you want hi-rez keep the firewire box on hand. I have both setup into one of my Lavry's all the time at my computer. The Hag unit into the XLR input and the M-Audio USB into the digital-RCA input. I switch the inputs on the front. I have my Oppo using the Lavry optical input selection.

Maybe the mix up is in understanding my reference to hi-rez. I don't mean sound quality I mean whether you use the CD format 44.1kHz or a higher rate of something like 88.2 or 96kHz. The HAG does not do higher than 48kHz.
