Hello ultrasone edition 9 and grado rs1

Hello all,
Since I have got some time left before I have to hop on the bus to go to uni today, I thought I would tell you about my new purchase that has arrived yesterday! Namely, the ultrasone edition 9 modded/recabled and bought new from aloaudio.
It has been recabled with Ken's new sxc (silver and copper) cable and it has the seem mod as his modded hfi780.
I am not sure if recabling really makes a difference and wont start a discussion about it here, but I could make a good deal, and at least its easy if I ever want to go balanced, just have to change the plugs.
I did a lot of research before buying this headphone and I was very anxious the few days before receiving it because this is my total first experience with ultrasone. The reactions to ultrasones were rather mixed on this board so it was a wild guess for me in the end if this would be the right headphone for me.
I like the grados (bu tnot their claustrophobic soundstage) and the akg k701 but Ido no tlike the senn hd650 or the denon d5000. Since sound/enjoyment of sound is such a personal thing it is of course always best to audition stuff first.
See my profile for what equipment I use at home, I havent been able to try them with imod/iqube yet since the iqube still has to charge and the charging cable will hopefully be here today.
So, i was rather worried when the headphone arrived at my home yesterday and hardly dared put them on (they have already had 3 days of burn in on a burn in generator at aloaudio).
But when I actually put them on I was very surprised at how comfortable they are, certainly more comfortable then the grados and the senn hd650. Their genera lbuild reminded me of the sennheiser hd280pro. I actually like it that they are not too classy looking because I want to take them with me on the go...
I like a mechanism that has solid clicks to change the adjusment of headphones, this is a bit finicky but it certainly isnt the only headphone that has this adjustment system.
These headphones actually block sound, unlike the denons and they seal well on my head. I feel no pain or pressure from them and they dont get that hot, though in general I prefer velour over leather or pleather. They are not heavy or light to me, theu just sit fine on my head.
I wa s very worried about comfort before these headphones arrived but luckily they are fine for me. They cannot touch beyer comfort of course! They might be a bit more comfortable then the akg k701 because that headband is painful with my hair.
I of course also did some listening, yesterday evening and this morning after continued burn in. I dont know if burn in actually works but better safe then sorry...
First off, I dont hear anything from the s-logic. I did not expect to so I am not disappointed in this... They sound like any other headphone to me in this regard.
You do not really hear tha tyou are listening to closed headphones, which is a big plus... They do not have the negative boxy/resonant/boomy ejffects that some closed headphones do have...
Soundstage is good but not great, i think the beyer dt880/600 has a more coherent/3d soundstage. the ultrasones might have a bit broader/wider soundstage but the beyers have more depth i think.
Instrument separation might be a bit better then with the beyers, but it cant touch the akg k701.
these headphones might not be as bright as I am used too... I think I like my headphones a bit brighter/more upfront (I think the beyer dt880/grado sr325i and akg k701 have all a bit deeper soundstage and are a bit more upfront and thats why I might prefer them more in this regard).
I in general like listening to music at low volumes, but with good sound quality. I think you have to play the ed9 fairly loud for it to sound its best, I really heard a difference when cranking the volume up. I have to play it a bit louder then i am accustomed to/then I like in order for it to sounds its best/most impressive.
I think the midrange is a bit laid back/recessed but this might be because of the bass, anyway its not senn-like. I think senn is much darker-sounding with a different kind of bass and way more recessed mids.

I was very much impressed with the ed9s bass. But it was not overpowering to me... I find though that I have to play the ed9s louder then I like to get them to sound right...

edit: after listening to a bit more volume I am not totally sure about the ed9s bass. It is not overpowering the midrange in the way that for example the dt990/600 does, so the biggest part of my worries where bass was concerned were luckily unfounded, but in some tracks its rather prominently there... as if I am using speakers with an added subwoofer again... (fyi i sold my speakers+sub and went for fulsize 2.0 speakers) The bass seems to be a bit alone from the rest of the music, not totally overpowering but a bit distracting at times, as if have a subwoofer... I think the ed9 has more bass then the denon d5000 (I did have the d5000 with the markl mod though) and this ed9 is modded in order to give it a tighter bass response I think...

conclusions so far: Luckily many of my fears were unfounded. This headphone does not give me the wow-effect like the grado sr325i beyer dt880/600 and most importantly the akg k701, but it does not disappoint like the denon d5000 or the senn hd650 did for me. I would personally not keep it if it was an open headphone BUT it is closed! this means it will have a different purpose in my rig. I will use it mostly on the go where I want noise blocking. And if I look at the closed field it is a totally different story. The hd25-1 might isolate a bit better still and be a bit more portable but the ed9 sure sounds better! It is the best closed headphone I have heard upto this point and it actually blocks noise/keeps the sound of your headphones in/is sturdy and fairly portable... So, since I am using it as a portable headphone on the go, it will stay with me....

I think these comments may be due to not using the right amp with the Edition 9

This is not the typical sound of the Edition 9, and if you have the wrong amp or wrong tubes/opamps in it, you may hear it not sound right. Mine are not recessed in the mids and are more upfront with deep soundstage, and mine sound best at quiet volumes.

PS: I went through a lot of trouble trying 6 different rectifier tubes for my Woo WA6 before I found one that made the Edition 9 sound right. Are you using an amp, and will these be portable only, or for home and portable?

Nice write up Anouk, but I think you'll see that better in the next few days.
Keep posting your updates.

Hey everyone, Well, I do not mean to say the ed9s are much laid back and totally non-upfront I mean this in comparison with other headphones... e.g. grado sr325i. So far I tried them with my home amp, I am not using tubes so tube rolling is not an option, not much of a diyer anyway... at home I use th eheadroom pimped out desktop, (so desktop format, small box but with max modules, max dac and stepped volume control). This means that at home my source is the headroom max dac connected to my computer through kimber usb cable. I wont be uisng this headphones at home much though because I want to be aware of my surroundings, at least through the days, I odnt want to miss any phone calls or doorbells. I have tried them today on the go strainght from the headphone line-out of my imod. I nthe future I will be using the imod with a cryo x silver lod cable and the iqube portable amp.
Oh yes I find that using the brightness switch on my amps helps the headphones get a bit more bright...
Of course this headphone also might sound different depending on the size of ones head... I have a rather small head..

Hello once more, some things I forgot, at home a dac and a preamp are very important to me so I need a headphone amp which has those two things, because space is limited as it is. I am considering in the future trying the new corda symphony amp against my current headroom amp, which is a lot bettere then anything I heard before btw... I never thought such good sound would come out of my computer, deead silent, no hiss whatsoever, veru neutral but VERY dynamic and open sounding, with a tiny smidge of warmth...
As for portable amps I might try the new rudistor or the 2move but I really like the fact that you can charge the iqubes batteries internally...

I disagree. Anouk's impressions mirror exactly what I and the 7 other guys felt like when we tried the Edition 9 at the last german meet - a bit too much bass, strange mids, unprominent highs, work-to-rule soundscape. And we did have lots of very very big balls amps there for sure.

It's just an ordinary love-or-hate thing, dependent from listening habits and genre choice, similar to the AD2000 or SR325. That typical headfi "propably wrong amp" gearitis approach is something I will never understand.

Hello, Well I am willing to try different amps, I am just not sure there will be a lot of difference since I will only be using oslid state amps... According to ken from alo the ed9s work the best with solid state amps anyway... I now have the iqube and the headroom pimped out desktop and in the near future I want to try the new meier-audio symphony amp+dac for home use and the portable rudistor...
I have now listened a few hours with the ed9s straight from an ipod and I must say it soudns good from every source you plug it into... Also there is no pain even after a few hours of listening... The headphone certainly does not block as well as the hd280pro or the hd25-1 though...

HI Anouk,

Hey thanks for posting your impressions. I would only like to add that these headphone and for sure the cable are going to change quite a lot for the better as your use them (burn in) so please do report back. The new cable ALO Cryo SXC has a very long burn in time, more than I would have liked but it is what it is.

THX

Great, unbiased impressions, inline with what others reports.
Based on your sound preferences sounds like you might like SA5000 and W5000.

Thanks for the review Anouk. I like the comparison with SR325i/K701/D5000/DT-880(600)/HD650. It helps to figure their sound signature.

Based on your review it seems to be an overpriced headphone, better go with Ultrasone Proline 750 for price/performance ratio.

Congrats on your purchase, Anouk. Not too long ago I added one to my stable and have been very pleased so far. I am waiting with my impressions though till they are fully burned in (250 hrs aprox.) and I fully get to know their sound.
Their mids are still a tad recessed indeed (not that much that it bothers me though). I hope the bottom will open up some more as I am still waiting for that. It's not that the bass department is too much, it just isn't as layered/transparant as I want it to be so far. I am not sure if that's maybe what you meant when you talked about their bass...?
If it doesn't open up I guess it's time to look for another amp coz I know they can sound better.

Edit: btw I read they are recabled but also modded...You mean you have an ed9 with mods inside the earcup...???

For me it's absolutely not an overpriced headphone, certainly not when compared to the Proline 750. I was more than happy to lay down the extra cash and hearing what more it brought me.

Thanks for a nice review.

Has any of you compared bass performance of the Edition 9 and the Pro 2500 ? I find the Pro 2500 deliver incredible bass, with my OMZ DAC/HEADAMP. It is like listening to stereo 12-inch subwoofers !

Try Brent Lewis' Drum Sex tracks.

This is not the first time I am reading about Ken's moded Edt.9. It would be interesting at list to hear what are the modes performed.

I moded my Edt.9 so many times that I can't even tell what it did to them compare to stock one.

Well yeah, sure that would be interesting indeed. It's just, buying a modded one without even heard the stock version seems a bit odd to me. To each his own though

Too bad you can't even remember the stock version. I hope it still sounds better this way lol

Hey wolf, Ken andrewwot and others of course,
Yes the ed9s have mods inside the earcups, (look in the alo sponsor forum in the ed9 thread and the alo modded hfi780 thread for more details). As for not trying the sstock one, i think the mod tightens up the bass, and considering that I still find the bass too much at times I am not so sad I did not try stock first... It would have been impractical anyway, since I am not a diyer. This way I at least have a year long warranty.
I will indeed wait for more burn in. I am not sure if burn in actually works, and I wanted to post some impressions out of the box, but better safe then sorry... I think i will give them 2 weeks of burn in since ken already gave them 3 days on his burn-in generator.
I cannot compare the ed9s to any other ultrasones because I have never used any others. I would not call my review unbiased because I of course prefer a certain sound signature... (k701/dt880) As I said before I did not like the hd650 but I noticed after listening to them that I might like a pair of headphones with a little bit more bass...
Overpriced... Well I htink that is a bit of a bold statement... I am not sure ir I am qualified (I do not call myself an audiophile, if I hear what I hear sounds right to me than I keep it) but Iw ouldnt say that I think the ed9s are neccessary better then the dt880 or k701 but that is just based on personal experience/enjoyment of sound. But for me currently they are the ideal closed headphone as stated/explained before, although, indeed they are very pricey, but its a hobby and this is a sort of special edition headphone. Maybe the new pro 900 will be a more price/performance choice, although I havent kept up with that thread for a few days now.
Oh the w5000 and the sa5000 are on my wishlist! But money is a little tight now lol! Thanks Ken for posting here. I will indeed give them burn-in time. They are connected to my computer right now when I amlistening to my speakers. the volume is a bi tlow now though because othewrise the speakers would be too loud.
