I really love Boyd Rice and Friends.

One of his noise/ambient projects was is NON. This stuff was really cool in 1998 but I really wonder how many folks are into it now? For a while maybe up until 2000 I was really into it. We had a college radio show that just started off with the sound of a large fan running then we would mix in different stuff. About a year later somehow the college authorities came in and started to kind of program the station. It seemed that the more underground the music was the less it was played.

This is Sonic Boom's 1998 project Data Rape by the group EAR.

I still play KK Null once in a while. The best part of this music is it is only loved by few! Extreme Metal is kind of like it now, being still underground and not mainstream. The difference is you can play extreme metal loud but noise is, I think played better at lower volume. I still remember the pain of seeing underground noise acts in clubs when the volume was a little to high and it was the kind wonderful experience you may have encountered at a WW2 SS camp.

I'm curious as to your thoughts on the Spell project?

@samsqanch,

Not familiar with the Spell Project. At that time in my life I was hanging out in a used/new record store. You get exposed to a lot of music just due to what others know about. We could play anything around so we attempted to astound and amaze each other by pulling mystery stuff off the shelf and not stating what it was, but just spinning it. The fun was trying to guess the music.

This was how I was shown Boyd Rice. I don't agree with his social/political statements but he is an artist and I like the mood he makes. I only have one NON CD and one Boyd Rice CD. In the late 1990s we would mix all this with Lounge Music, German Krautrock( Which is antifascist) and Avant-garde Electronic Music as it all would blend into a soup mix well.

I don't really like harsh noise, yet I do like noise when mixed with other genres. Like for instance SYR 8 where Sonic Youth improvises with Merzbow and some saxophone guy. Does anyone have nice albums in this niche?
