Or one could save even more by getting the D2000. Seems that Denon phones get worse (or less value for dollar) as you go up. I just got the D2000 and don't hear any of the 'problems' associated with the D5000.

I think there's a pretty significant difference between the 2000 and 5000 so I have to disagree there.

However, I do think the 7000 might be the wrong step. The first impressions make it sound as if it's a lateral movement instead of an improvement on the original signature.

Judging by the reviews and markl's description of the pre-mod sound, I'd say the difference is not desirable, especially $300 out-of-pocket to find out?

The finish was implemented primarily to correct the issue of the Denon logo wearing off the D5000. It also helps resist light scratching of the wood.

At this price, I'm more partial to a grade of mahogany that shows more grain.
