Any of you head-fi folks surf? Texas beaches going off this week!

So any of you pathetic and addicted head-fi folks (myself included) ever get away for a surf?

I've been surfing on the Texas coast (and all over the world, really) for the past 25 years or so. Can't get enough.

Anyway ...

Hurricane Gustav just this last monday, delivered us some seriously ALL-TIME conditions here in Texas.

Surfed till we puked.

;-)

Here's some shots:

8 to 9 foot faces and just DRIVING!

Looks great! I haven't been out much since high school, but used to surf, bodysurf and swim almost every day during the summers. I miss it; really should take it up again. Am glad you found a few good waves in Texas - have you surfed anywhere else?

Aww man. It was hitting so hard. That inside wave you see breaking in those shots was serious board snapping fare ... breaks over sand in water about two feet deep. If your not bleeding, with shells lodged in your back every now and again, then you weren't really charging.

I've surfed lots of places ...

Been to Central America about seven times in the past 20 years ... Costa Rica, Nicaragua, etc.

Also surfed many times on the West coast of the US, both California and Mexico ... to many times to count, really.

Hawaii ...

Many trips to the East coast (Florida, Maryland, Virginia, etc.) ...

Hell, I've even surfed tanker wavers in the Houston ship channel! <LOL!>

...

Of all those places, Texas of course is not the best ... at least not on average ... but those waves earlier this week could compete with most of any I've surfed, anywhere ....

Great time it was.

I went out on my 9' for the first time in 2 years last week at Swami's in Encinitas, CA. It was awesome despite the wicked soreness the next day.

Very mellow session with waist high rollers.

Those lines look gnarly in Texas. Looks like the storm beach break i used to surf in the South Bay, CA.

Ah man.

"Swami's" is the stuff of legend.

Never surfed it but man have I read about it.

California spots I've been fond of?

Trestles (of course), Salt Creek (love the take off peak by the rocks), Blacks Beach (of course), Churches (have a friend in the Navy), the jetti at Mission Beach in San Diego (pounds!), and various spots we've discovered just across the border in Mex.

I would have already joined you guys as a resident of CA if it weren't for the year round cold water.

That's a deal breaker for me. Can't stand wetsuits.

Oh yeah ... can't believe I forgot ...

The Newport Beach jettis are also fantastic. And the party scene is quite memorable as well.

Sounds like you've been around a lot more than me. I've always been a longboarder, started surfing late at the Cove in Palos Verdes (not Lunada Bay, even though I grew up in PV, too localized). Got my best and biggest waves there.

Surfed a lot in Manhattan Beach when I lived there, just beach break.

I never minded suits since i had to wear one from the start. I always liked the stormy cold weather cause it kept you thin-skinners away.

You should see Pensacola on it's better days...

Keeping an eye on Ike, as it seems he might be entering our waters some time next week.

Awwwwww, yeah!

After 3 years of skimboarding and sporadic bodyboarding I decided I should learn how to surf. I've been surfing since beginning of August and I've already managed to get up on the board and ride waves! Lots of fun and really good for your body!

I'll look for some pics of the beaches I've been!

Aww sweet god.

This one's coming right up my Houston driveway just about:

Pray for my audio gear!

Yep, it's looking like this could be the big one. I'm hoping for a last-minute jog to the east. If not, we're looking at hurricane force winds for 12+ hours!

Surf is definitely up tonight though... saw pics of surfers on TV and thought you were probably there.

Naw. As I told my voraciously and presently surfing long time bros ... I'm sitting this one out.

Couple hours ago I got a text from a friend in S. Padre who says it's breaking 20 feet there (awww, yeah!).

But myself ...

Had too much work to do around the house: taping, boarding, etc.

I've got a stack of plastic bags in my closet in case my bedroom window blows out (since my computer and audio gear is just beneath it).

So far, my zip code is expected to get 78mph winds ... and considering I live in a house densely surrounded by other houses (therefore no direct/head on winds) ... I expect to make it through with no blown windows.

Looks like we'll have to meet for the tube sale some time next week, eh?

Yeah, I think so. We can't meet at Fry's this weekend because it won't be open!

I'm watching waves crash over the 17' Galveston seawall.

And the storm is still 200 miles away!!
