Same here. In fact, it's a pretty drastic EQ to get it flat, although for non-classical music I have only halved the lower trim for a punchier rock/pop sound.

Probably doesn't help that I have a desk made of cheap hollow Ikea.

received a pair of black A2 today. really nice built & package. first impressions after few hours out of an iAudioXL5: not impressed. not disappointed but I find the bottom end boomy and mask the rest of the music. perhaps Im used to the clarity and details that HP offers and the A2 cannot match that. hopefully after burn-in the bass will ease out a bit. apart from that they sound pretty darn good. a bargain for sure

what better source can I use to reveal the full potential of them baby speakers, a DAC maybe or an ext. sound card, or both?

I've seen the graphs of the a2 and they do have a midbass hump to compensate for the small woofer. Maybe equalizing this would help bring the midrange to the front?.

I am wanting to ask pretty much the same question as the original poster. I am wanting either the A5 or A2. I will probably not use them for CPU speakers but rather as a boom box type player in my bedroom and kitchen. I will also used them outside on my patio. With size not being a factor, how much better-smoother do the A5's sound. I want some good bass, but not over bassy. I will be using them with a LOD ipod or Onkyo DX-7555 cd player (bedroom).

I have been debating for a few months if I should get the Onkyo A-9555 or M-282 and get some Monitor audio RS1's for my bedroom, but wonder if I spent the extra $150 for the A5's would they sound good enough where I wouldn't want anything more?

All I want them for is Music Only

Somewhat off-topic:

 

My A5 makes a loud electronic click every time its auto shutoff enables; it's quite loud and jarring. My A2, which should also have this feature, never makes any such noise or anything like it. It is silent.

 

What the heck? Did Audioengine give its smaller, cheaper speakers better electronics for managing its auto-off mode?

From the Audioengine website, here is the difference between the A5 and A2 auto-off function:

 The A5's are equipped with a power-saving circuit that turns off the speaker's final stage amp when there is no input for about 15 minutes.  The A2 has a idle mode with actives right after you stop playing music. Hi, what kind of DAC do you have? I am new to the whole world of DAC so not sure what I am looking at. I have new iMac mid 2011 and want to get A2s or A5s and from what I gather a DAC will improve sound quality considerably?
