Cheap DAP set-up

Hey guys,

I've finally decided to splurge on a DAP after using my Creative Zen Micro for like 2 years, but I need to keep it cheap since I'm also buying a new PC set-up Does this look good?

DAP: Ipod Nano, the new version if it really does come out on September 9th.
Reasoning: Most PMPs like the Cowon D2/iriver Clix2 are too bulky for me, and the iriver doesn't have enough storage. All I need this for is music, the new Nano should be cheaper and I need 16GB. Yes I know everyone hates Ipods, I kinda do too and this will be my first one, but if you look at the competition they aren't that bad. Plus pretty cheap, and I haven't heard anything bad about the sound quality.
Amp: FiiO, because it's cheap and tiny Was considering the D2 Boa but honestly I don't want to carry around $400+ of audio equipment with me and hope it won't break.
IEMs: Denon C700 (not sure what the difference is between 700K and 700S is), relatively cheap, good for my type of music (trance, etc., or so I heard). Was considering the M5s/super.fi 5s, but those a bit expensive too.

Shouldn't this be in Portable Source Gear?

Anyway if you need a good-sounding inexpensive DAP with 16GB, I would recommend Sony A729.

Sorry if I put it in the wrong section :| I've kinda decided on everything cept the headphones, but then again I'm asking if it'll all work together, which is gear...

I wouldn't decide 100% on a player that is not out yet because nobody knows what they sound like. The new Nanos could have terrible SQ, we don't yet know. =)

i definitely wouldn't call the sony players inexpensive. You can get an 80 gig zune or a 160 gig ipod classic for the same price/less. Or a 16 gig cowon d2 for less.

Cowon D2 isn't less, unless you buy a lower-capacity D2 and put an SD card in to reach 16GB. And of course the hard drive players will be cheaper. Hard drives are cheaper.

Yeah the d2 is less than the 16 gig sony player. I just looked up the prices on sonystyle and amazon.

(Since this kinda turned into a DAP discussion, would appreciate it if an admin moved it to Portable Source)

Of course I will wait until the new Nano, since it might not even come out. D2 does not appeal to me...at all :\ I can't stand the look of it, no matter how good it may be feature-wise. I was looking an Ipod Touch for some time, but decided it's way too expensive...iriver clix2 has only 8GB with a hefty price to boot, compared to the Zune 80GB at the same price. Zune...looks nice, if a bit big, but I don't really see a reason to get it. Wireless sharing would be nice (I even heard you could bypass the 3 times rule, don't know if Microsoft fixed that), if anyone I knew OWNED a Zune. Through 4 years of college, and 1 year of work, I've only seen TWO people with a Zune, and they were Microsoft fanboys, none of my friends have it, etc, so it would be pretty useless. Spacewise my music collection is about 11GB (mostly in MP3, if it was in FLAC like everyone else on Head-Fi it'd be bigger :P), but putting movies on there for long trips is always nice, so I'd like at least 16GB.

Maybe wait until Cowon's successor to the D2 comes out? Should be before Christmas. I find the pink Cowon O2 to be amazingly attractive.

Yeah, read about those, and the O2 does look sexy, if a bit big for my needs. Going back to phones, would you (or anyone) pick C700 or super.fi 3s? I'm thinking about going for the 3s, since they are a bit cheaper, but still nice...

I have not listened to either of those earphones, sorry. But if you're looking for something around that price range there's not a lot wrong with the ER-6i. They're a bit bass-light, but if you use them with Shure olives it will help out with that.

This is a cheap setup? :/

Anyway, the c700's are fantastic for trance once burned-in a bit. You'll love them for it.

The amp and the headphones are, yes, relatively cheap compared to the rest of Head-Fi :P Thanks for the info, I read that somewhere else too, so they caught my eye.

I've owned both the C700s and the C551s, and I would just get the latter. Smaller form factor, good Denon sound. Like $50 cheaper. Also made of metal, sturdy. Right now, $50 plus $6 S&H on buy.com (third party seller). They are $99 on Amazon, while the C700s are $199.

If i'm not mistaken, there's some superfi 3's for $60 on the trade forum.
