Well you might be surprised how competitive the 740c/840c may be compared to a multi-thousand dollar source. An audition is a must! Don't let the price tag fool you. With Esoteric, you're really paying for the ever-so-alluring and prestigious brand name, the spectacular build quality and of course, the famous disc transport!

^^ This is more along the lines of what I was hoping for.

Indeed I'm working on an audition. I think the easiest thing I can do is probably order the 840c and I'll have enough time to run through its paces in the "return time window" alloted.
