I have a problem............

As many of you know, not a week goes by without me preposing some crazy DIY project I plan to valiently attempt.

The problem is I never get around to doing any of them .

Before I have a chance to implement any project, a new BETTER project enters my mind and the viscous cycle repeats.

I have this same 'problem' when it comes to birthday and christmas. For the past 3 or 4 years I have not recieved a b-day or x-mas gift. This is because I am a research-o-holic. When ever I finally find something I what, another thing I might want comes along and I start researching that. The cycle continues....

The problem isn't that you're a "research-a-holic" -- rather, it's that you're looking for "perfect". The problem is, while you keep looking for "perfect", you're missing out on all the fun and enjoyment you could be having with something that's merely "very good" or "excellent".

I suspect that this probably applies to many aspects of your life. You need to learn how to be decisive and content with your decisions; it's very important.

There's a very wise saying: "The perfect is the enemy of the good." It means that if you continually strive for only perfection, you may both never achieve it and also completely miss out on things that are good.

Get started by building a CMOY, a Meta, or a kit. You'll have so much fun building it that it'll be worthwhile, even if you end up not keeping the amp. Have fun!

I like researching things Wodgy, so I am not miserable. In a way I think I don't buy things offen because I don't want it to spoil the "chase". If I buy something I know longer desire to research that segment, and I want to keep researching.

Part of the reason is I am afraid of spending money. I don't want to build something just for the heck of it.

I think I am pretty desicive. Whenever I walk in a store I know EXACTLY what I want. I get what I want and then leave. I never go into a store not knowing what I want.

I am in someway proud of my miser-ly-ness. Everyone in my family are impulse buyers except for me. I see other people waste there money and am proud that it is not me.

The problem is I don't feel like I don't accomplish much.

Hi,

Don't worry about it. There are so many people who don't even read the articles on the amps they are building. Many don't read specs on the chips they are using.

These people do build amps, but then they are more likely to get stuck with things. (ie burn out chips, put in wrong resistors, etc)

Also, this is the precisely why there are not too many people who are trying new things. Many can't go beyond the level of kit-building.

It is not about perfection. It is about knowing the design. This give you power to choose to do things correctly and to conjure up different or better designs. (You can repair your own amps too!)

I understand that researching takes long. But I think you will find it will give you more joy over time. (Mostly because you don't have to ask an jer*ass like me every time something goes wrong.)

Tomo

P.S. I remember the humiliation when I couldn't get a tube radio to work so I had to send it for repairs. Avoiding that goes highly recommended. Believe me.

Another thing that might help is to listen to the advice people here give you.

Don't worry about it; you're a J. Find an online MBTI test to figure that one out, if you don't know already.

May I ask what the MBTI is?

I have taken the Kersey Temperment Sorter and am an ENTP.

I appreciate the advice people give me. Whether I choose to follow it is a different story

I'm no psychologist, but as I understand it, some people like having the option to buy something more than actually having something. I'm sure the same thing applies to being able to build something.

Uh huh,

I like having a good amount of money so I can buy parts without worrying about the next month's utility bills. (Darn electric water heater)

... I like having a good amount of money so I can buy parts I need but still be able to live in an apartment where hot water never run out. (Not to mention a bath tub that I can bath up to my shoulders!)

Tangent is really correct with this one. Tangent, you will be the in-house shrink from now on. We count on you, buddy.
