Jazz Headphones: HD 650, DT 880, or K 701? - Page 2

I'll have to give a nod to Grado RS2. I'm a jazz trumpet player, and when I auditioned some cans, I brought some Chet Baker. the Grados allowed me to hear every beautiful tonal thing going on in the combo. The Senns just didnt deliver with the sparkle of the rs2. on a side note, I found the 325i's painful with the same recording. just too piercing.

Having said that, I am also considering the k701, because its less expensive, and I've heard it can deliver similar highs, and a bit more bass. I have not heard it though.. its on my list.

i've used all three and own the 650's....a slight nod to the 650's over the akg's over the beyers (which were never really my cup of tea)

I own all three (DT880. HD650 and K701) and agree with StanleyB1 and JMCIII, the 701s are the best of these three with instrumental jazz, provided of course that they are driven by a proper amp.

I use my K701 exclusively when listening to jazz. The drivers are fast enough to take on drum kits with little sound colouration, and flexible enough to capture the dying seconds of a guitar string after release with real emotions. The HD650 in comparison turns emotions into warmth, which can be very much out of place in many jazz expressions captured on CD. Diana Krall springs to mind.
The K701 also needs a warm up time of 15 minutes or more.
How much amp do I need to drive the K701?

I own both the DT880 ('03 version) and AKG 701 which I use with the Benchmark DAC1 as source/amp.

I listen to a lot of classic BLUE NOTE (e.g. Wayne Shorter) and I prefer the Beyers.

I'm driving the 701s with a Purity Audio Caliente, and wow, I'm very happy with the sound.

What do you mean by this 15 min. warm up time ... ?

Sorry, I have heard the senns and the akgs, but not enough to recommend one over the other for jazz. However I really just wanted to say that amazon is selling the k701s for $270 right now, FYI.

If you think jazz needs soul, you want the HD650.

GS1000, no competition...

You can't go wrong with either the HD650 or the HD600 for Jazz. I prefer the presentation and ambiance of the HD650 but you might want a brighter presentation provided by the HD600; it's all a matter of preference.

You just need an amp with guts, of whatever vintage. I use both an Original Electronics Master in my main system and a Headroom Portable Micro Amp w/DAC in my portable/bedroom system (the Portable Micro has USB AND Optical inputs so I can pug it into my computer or my Oppo). As long as the amp has decent power you'll get the most out of the K701s.

And to all you bass freaks, while the K701s won't make your stomach roll with the thumping in your head, they offer all the tight, clean, clear, deep bass one hears live in an acoustic setting. If you want colored sound - i.e., bass heavy uber all, go Sennheiser or Beyer or Denon. They'll be right up your alley. Just not as neutral and natural.

Just my (adjusted for inflation) $2.

^ Amen to that!

Just listened to some Jazz on my new AD2000 and WOW i was amazed. There is so much detail in the instruments and the drums sound so natural whether it be the bass or the hi hats.
