Ath-ad2000 vs. Denon d2000?

Thread Starter
I received the ad2000s from Musician's Friend a few days ago, and so far these are really great except for the mids which are a little too prominent for some music; during some songs it feels like the singer is shouting right into my ears while the instruments are too far back.

I've been looking to try the Denon d2000s. Can someone give me a comparision between the two? Mainly I'm looking for a more even presentation, while retaining the ad2000's incredible texture and detailed bass. I needed something that will do well unamped.

I'd suggest HD600. It has a more even presentation, a larger soundstage and a bit more comfortable. It does OK unamped but an amp is always recommended.

I happened to have both of them for several months. Denons were stock apart from wood cups and D5000 cable (no markl mod).

As such, I dare to say these two cans are on opposite spectrum.

Denons have totally different bass presentation. Compared to ATH the mids sounded recessed a lot - but that could be contributed to really prominent mids on ATH. The highs on both are roughly the same.

Denons compared to ATH are very warm sounding, laid back. IMO the main difference is in speed and detail. ATH are like taking scalpel to the body of the music. Very detailed, speedy with lots of attack, almost aggressive.
With a bit of EQ nudge at 80 Hz, these sound incredible with metal and all sorts of "busy" music where everything happening at once.

Markl mod apparently brings more detail to Denons. Otherwise if you swap ATH with stock Denons you'd be surprised how different these cans sound.

BTW Edition 9 solved all this, it gave me the best features of Denons and ATH in one package. Happy now.

If your budget extends into 1k territory, you could consider these. If they turn up not to be your cup of tea, shouldn't have problem selling them.
In no way I'm trying to say that Ed9 are the best and end-of-all cans, but I'm speaking from my personal experience and journey I took here.

Cheers
