harvey rosenberg once said something to the effect that making great sounding gear involves knowing what mistakes to make.

the question is whether the recording plus playback system creates a stimulus that produces an effect qualitatively identical to the effect producted by the "original" this may have very little to do with the recording SOUNDING identical to the event which was recorded.

there have been several ocasions when listening thru headphones where i thought someone was in the room with me speaking, when it was really in the recording (an audience member talking, e.g.,). with my speaker-based system playing, i've sometimes thought that there were musicians playing in the room (when heard from an adjacent room in my apartment).

I would have to emphatically disagree with that statement. Let's not get carried away now.

Because the majority of people have a budget and have never had the opportunity for long term ownership of all the flagship headphones?

You're letting them off easy by only referring to them as ugly.
