CDP to buy blind for Graham Slee Solo MC + HD600s

I sold my beloved hifi system (Cyrus cd8+PSXR, Cyrus 8VS+PXR, Cyrus Smartpower Plus & Spendor s5e) 9 months ago, as I couldnt bear to watch my young son stick ice cream in cd, fingers in speakers etc, I thought I could get by with my £70 Goodmans stereo, but the bug has bitten again.

I kept my HD600s and realise I can now have my audio heaven in a headphone only rig, minus the stress of damaged equipment and having to play my music at set times very low.

I have bought a nearly new Graham Slee Solo + PSU off ebay and this should arrive shortly and I am planning to upgrade my HD600 cable to equinox.

This leaves a cd player to buy (I am borrowing my Dads Primare for 8 weeks while he is away), I know the pitfalls of buying blind but its hard where I live to try out a good selection of players and the worst that can happen is hopefully I can sell it on ebay for what I paid for it if it doesnt match.

I am wanting to spend £500 - £1000 ($1000 - $2000) for a second hand machine, I listen to all sorts of music rock, rap, jazz, dance etc, so am looking for a good all round machine that will match my other components.

I have a (very) shortlist of:

Musical Fidelity A5 CD
Meridian 508.24 or GO8

I am drawn to these because of rave reviews and the strengths being their neutrality which will hopefully make for a less risky blind buy purchase.

Any advice on other cdps to put on my shortlist or anyone who has used the above players with similar kit would be most appreciated, as well as any interconnect advice.

Thanks Mark

not familiar with cyrus gear or the graham, however i've heard a good number of cdp's with hd600.

i'm not a fan of any MF products and for the meridians, i only liked their older 506 and 508 20bit models. the later versions kinda killed their flavor by trying to up the attack and dynamics. similar to the direction that hd650 went. if you happen to like the changes, my post might be less helpful and good luck anyway.

i find the hd600 mates best with smooth & refined players instead of the more hi-fi aggresssive type, the exception being krell kav 300cd which was a balls to the wall exciting and fun sound but i found it got fatiguing after an album or two.

best cdp i've heard with hd600 was electrocompaniet emc-1 but it's a little over $2k used. they do however produce a dac called ecd-1 that has the same circuit as the cdp and goes for under 2k.
its sound is very milky almost analog like with richness in the mids like no other. flavored approach

next up was cary cd 306/200 its sound probably resembles that of the senns more than the others i'm listing with a more neutral response. has great bass and is very refined yet maintains resolving power. balanced approach

sonic frontiers sfcd-1 - relaxed sound, with a touch of warmth in the body. a gentle approach.

sim audio moon nova. cleanest sounding of the bunch.

audio aero prima. tremendous depth and texture, this is the player if you listen to a lot of recorded live music.

arcam fmj cd23. has a forward presentation. i liked its treble response the best with the senns. the hd600 has kinda grainy treble and for some reason that tizz and bite are gone with this player without losing out low level detail.

Thanks Panda, there is a fair few cdps I am not familiar with you have mentioned for me to read up on. I am interested in what you said about the arcam fmj cd23 as that was on my shortlist, but thought I could get more for my money elsewhere. I know it is another machine that has had rave reviews and they have been on ebay for £3-400 so if it is up there it may give me what I am looking for and save me some cash to put towards a good interconnect.

If you don't mind using your PC as the transport then DAC could also be an option. The models that are popular in this forum could actually be tried out before purchase in the UK - take a little effort though but possible.

I have tons of redbook cds so I am looking for a dedicated cd player to go into headphone amp, also where I have my computer wouldnt make this practical.

Then why not try out both Meridian and MF in shop to see which one you like best? It shouldn't be too difficult to find either of the units. Since Graham Slee is very small you could also bring it & HD600 to test out the CD players in the shop.

Can you really not demo before buying? I would think you would do better with a Cambridge 740/840C or Arcam FMJwhatever than MF or obsolete Meridian.

Its hard to test the Slee & Solo when looking for second hand equipment as the hi fi shops are stocking the latest model so hard to find MF5 Arcam etc, I am interested in the CA 840C as it had an average review in What Hi Fi (who are known to be full of s***) but from what I have read on the forums it is a cracking CD player, but would it take me up to the level of a MF A5CD that has rave reviews and would cost me £150 less than a 840C new (cant get them 2nd hand in England at moment)

Why MF gear gets good reviews in the UK rags truly baffles me - I've heard many MF CDPs and amps and never liked any of them! It's all subjective, but for me, MF is the epitome of solid state screechy unorganic sound. Their internals are also seriously unimpressive. They seem to spend most their budget on shiny casework, truly crap "power supply" "upgrades", and obsoleting their own product ranges.

You can get the Cambridge on 30 day trial from Richer Sounds; there's also some kind of deal on their website.

If you don't want to spend this much, then I'd go for an Arcam - even new FMJs are in your budget.

Slee Solo arrived today I cant believe how small and light it is (looks bigger and bulkier in pictures), certainly wouldnt be too much hassle taking it around various hifi shops to test equipment, I thought it was going to be Cyrus size and weight. May not be able to try the exact CDPs I am looking for but will certainly be able to try out similar models so can get familiar with each manufacturers sound.

I have loan of my dads Primare D30.2 CDP for 8 weeks while he is away, which is a cracking player and in the sort of second hand price range I am looking for so will provide a good benchmark to measure other players by.

I am still very drawn to the MF A5cd I know 1UP you said that it was over rated in the UK but all the reviews (UK & US) and user reviews (audioreviews.com) rave about it. I know where I can try out a A5.5 CDP so I guess will have to try for myself.

Wait till you see the inside of a CMoy as well, and have had a chance to match it against the iBasso with volume control. But have a bag at hand to catch the fluid.

Do keep in mind when you take your amp to the shops for testing this weekend it will not been fully run in yet.

As for reviews etc, it may or may not be 100% correct (or may not suit you or your amp/ headphone setup) so try them all out and see what you think. Purchase only when you are 100% happy.

kendal3334 do also have a look at wifi DACs which looks interesting. Seems more and more manufacturers are making those recently.

A few years ago, I carried my Slee and Senns to a hi-fi shop to audition the Arcam FMJ 33 and Meridian G07 and G08. I ended up getting the G08 second-hand from Audiogon. Still very happy with this set-up.
