Army-Fi?

Hey all...
I will be joining the army in 2010 or 2011.
I wondered if there are any soldiers here at Head-Fi, from all armies. UK, US, China, Israel, France, Russia - doesn't matter.

Anyway, are there any soldiers here? How is it?

My sister is currently in the army so I think of the army quite a bit these days...

I did not enjoy the army here in finland.

You might want to prepare yourself for not much spare space for a lot of audio equipment, I barely had room for my iPod, DT-770's and portable amp.

Not sure how much time you will have to listen to your equipment, we had free time from 18:30-22:00.

For what country will you be a soldier?

I won't be taking any fancy audio equipment I think. Probably a little flash player (a 2010 Sandisk/iAudio probably) and some IEMs or maybe KSC75s.
But maybe I won't be a fighting soldier, maybe something that involves computers and then I would be home every day (like my sister), so I won't be needing any fancy audio equipment either.

How often were you at home and for how long?
BTW, is the military service mandatory in Finland?
And I rather not say what army, I guess there's a lot of criticism on it around the world so I don't want to cause any miss comfort to anyone.
But it is an army you hear a lot of it. Any guesses?

I got home about every second weekend, with periods of every weekend and one time when I was in for 6 weeks straight.

Service for the country is mandatory, you can choose between civil service (12 months) and military service(6-12 months depending on what you do/become). After being in the army for 4.5months out of the mandatory 9 I decided that it was not my place and changed to civil service. I will start my civil service in 2010.

Sorry for my ignorance, but is Finland currently in war with someone? Or maybe there are terror acts or something cuz I was sure that the whole Scandinavian region is quite quiet, so I'm a bit surprised that there is a mandatory (although a very short one) military service.

Finland is not in war with anyone. My guess is that most finnish citizens are still afraid of Russia and therefore want to uphold the finnish defence. I won't elaborate because this could become too political.

Okay, thought it might have something to do with Russia.
I'll be at the army for 3 years minimum with a salary of 100-200 dollars a month :S
So I hope it will be good :]

Any other soldiers here?

Some countries stick to their mandatory military service for other reasons then just keeping up their defence (which can be achieved by a volunteer army). One idea is to keep the things that might be done with that army in the public focus.

If you or you son or daughter has to do military service you will be more concerened about what conflicts your amy will be sent to (At least that is the idea).

Thanks for that, I never actually thought about that. Very good point.

ppxnouse, were you in an army?
I was, but that was almost 20 years ago.
Back in the days we still listened to audio cassetes (wikipedia link added)
Actually I spent my whole first pay on a "good" set of headphones and a mobile cassette player. One of the best investments I ever made. Helped my to get through the long days away from home and to keep up motivation in the gym (Still live on the physical fitness I gained during that time ;-)).

Were you in the army when there was still the Berlin Wall?

No. Short after it was torn down.

I was in the Singapore Army, infantry. It was mandatory. The official purpose for this is for our own defense. Singapore was occupied by the Japanese in WWII when the British just "left".

Anyway, the more practical reasons for having a mandatory service is it's a lot cheaper for the gov. When I started, i was getting an allowance of *drum roll* $240/month. ( This is not a typo ). I heard it's better now, maybe $400. Still.......
