Chrono Trigger and Earthbound FTW!

Not really that much of a stretch.

Sorry, I should have added IMO at the end. I just think that most of its acclaim comes from nostalgia for old games... which is fine. I love old games myself, I've just played many better RPG games since.

Agree with superpredator. Chrono Trigger is really something. I would really like to see 3D remake of it sometime. And my opinion doesnt come from nostalgia, it was just a really good game with really good story.

I didn't read through the thread, but here are my recommendations (I'm sure they've all been said already)

Chrono Trigger
Secret of Mana 1, 2
Secret of Evermore
Final Fantasy 3, 5
Lufia 1, 2
Terranigma
Tales of Phantasia
Breath of Fire 1, 2
Super Mario RPG
Earthbound

Those are all the greats I played through and loved. I'm sure there are others...man SNES was the bomb.

Me too. Still, I've been playing Shadowrun recently, and it's not just nostalgia that makes it great.

I've read and heard so many great things about Chrono Trigger but I hadn't really played it until a few months ago. After playing/beating it, I have to say that it is definitely an over-rated game. It's a solid RPG, but there's nothing particularly amazing about it.

I'd recommend the following:

Lufia II
Final Fantasy VI
Super Mario RPG
Seiken Densetsu 3
Terranigma (Soul Blazer and Illusion of Gaia are also great if you have the time, but I felt Terranigma was the best of the 3)

I always thought Chrono Cross was superior to Chrono Trigger. >.>

*hides from the rabid CT fanboys*

I think Chrono Cross was a piece of crap. I played it through once, and most likely wont play it through ever again. Story was average, and gameplay was wierd at best. Even getting the proper ending pattern in the final boss was unnecessarily pain in the ass...

I wouldn't say CC was horrible, just average from square though. CT, on the other hand, had tons of optional endings (14? or 17?) great battle system, and superb storyline. One of few rpg games that you keep coming back over and over.

CC also had optional endings, and the battle system was actually pretty unique at the time. There weren't as many multi combo skill thingies as CC, but that was probably due to the large number of playable characters. The storyline, although not as coherent, is still pretty epic. That said, the game did seem to vary greatly depending on which of of the many character branches you followed.

I personally think both games were above average for their time, but nostalgia seems to always give the hand to CC.

I didn't find CC as addictive as CT...
I spent quite a bit of my early teen playing those darn RPG games.

I'm finishing up FF3 (japanese FF6) and I didn't realize there were so many different secrets/ side events available!! good times

CC wasn't really as cohesive and linear as CT, and the numerous cast of characters was a bit too much. I liked CC because it tried to be different than it's predecessor, yet still keep that "what the hell is going on" atmosphere.

FF6 was one of my favorites, although the slight open-world mechanic in the second half does leave confused a lot.

If this is your first time through, I highly recommend doing all the major side-quests and leveling up all of your characters. Because in the final dungeon, your entire party is split up into teams of four or something, and you have to use them all to get to Kefka.

Yup, I'm doing all the side quests (I didn't realize that you could save shadow!!)
going after some hidden espers before I level up for final battle.
