I just happened to have quad of these 5687GBs which I am keeping for the new owner of my Raptor.. It took me a while to found them though...

Unbelievable as it is, before even getting a chance to find these, I was able to get a NOS pair of...well, I'll wait till they get to me before posting. Two very high caliber 12au7 pairs incoming.

Ok, a new pair of 12AU7 has joined my B52, and that's a very special pair which will most likely stay till it dies. This is a pair of NOS Genalex B749 Gold Lion tubes. Here some images...the package itself is impressive and already gives the impression of something special even before a listening session. Actually, one is sad when he has to open such a package.

Some collectors will think of me being crazy actually using them, given the value they have for collectors (just wait till I consume them, then I'll maybe put them on sale ), but it's all about sound for me, and wow, they sound impressive, even if I guess they'll need some burning to real show what they can do. Let's see...think of the clarity of a Telefunken ECC802S and add even more of it, and not just a bit, quite a lot (which is quite a task if u know how these TFKs sound)...then add a touch of warmness and fullness in the midrange (the only sector the Teles are just a touch lacking in an otherwise superb presentation), a superb bass and a soundstage you wouldn't believe possible from headphones, and you have it. Expensive, but worth.

I have decided to sell off a lot of my tubes because of the Siemens E82CC. It is extremely detailed (even more so than the long plate mullards) and smooth and seems to be the best gain tube I have used so far. I also discovered the RCA Black/Bronze Plate 5687 is the best driver tube, I bought a pair of bronze plates and it pairs well with all my gain tubes, they are very dynamic and clean sounding. I have a couple of Siemens triple mica E82CC'c comming and I also scored 3 pairs of the RCA black plate 5687's and so no I feel I am set for tubes. I will be posting tubes for sale in the near future for Raptor, EF-1, CTH owners but some of the pairs would usefull for you guys with the B-52 as well.

Anyone tried the Amperex 7119 in the headphone section? Some say these are even better than Tung Sols 5687, they should last longer and the price is very similar.
After much testing especially with my new very revealing HD800 I've settled on the following tubes as my favorite:

Tung-Sol 5687 WB (driver)
Raytheon 12BH7A (input)
Telefunken smooth plate 12AX7 (preamp)

The biggest impact for me was changing the input tubes. There was really very little difference in the various output tubes I tried.

i have the following 12BH7A tubes:

- 12BH7A GE
- 12BH7A Raytheon
- 12BH7A Tungsol
- 12BH7A RCA
- 12BH7A Channel Master

i have tried them all and as of now, my favorite is the Tungsol. that's what i using with my HD800.

I finally managed to find a set of Sylvania 5687 GoldPin...they sound nice, but I'm still preferring the TungSols, at least with my balanced HD650. The sound sounds noticeably more airy with the TungSols, it seems just a bit of detail is missing when using the Sylvanias. Waiting for the HD800, my current preferred combo is Genalex B749/TungSols. Not using my B52 as preamp atm, so I still have the stock tubes on that section.

If you ever do end up using the B52 as a preamp, this is all you need:

1) Input Section: Mullard CV4004, Telefunken 12AX7 Smooth Plates. Allows for awesome tube rolling.
2) Preamp Output Buffer: Mullard 12AU7.

End of story over there. This is after trying out a stupendous number of different tubes.

Will 12AT7 tubes work in this amp? If so, what about a pair of Valvo 6201 pinched waist tubes?
You bet.

12AT7 works just fine. Doug, pm with your phone number

i'm back to using the RCA clear tops. great resolution on these tubes and extended highs. i was using the amperex 7316 for a while but found the sound a bit too warm for my setup. i would like to get some telefunkens or siemanns. neither are cheap though.

RCA clear tops are too bright up on top. a shame b/c great highs, transparency, and resolution. switched over to some 5814s. these are very nice. very smooth with great mids. will be looking to acquire more.
