Portable amp for MiniDisc

Dearest Head-cases

Please excuse my lack of familiarity with this process; this is my first inquiry in ForumLand.

I'm a pro musician; I work hotels as a solo performer and use backing tracks for accompaniment (I record 'em on a home studio rig and put them on minidisc for the gigs). To get more oomph out of my minidisc player I bought a PA2V2. It's a delightful little item and does the trick nicely however I'd like something that either gives me more sonic dynamics (bigger bottom, clearer mid-top) or has something akin to tone controls. I need it to be portable and a recharge feature is essential. I do not need or want a USB on it; it just won't get used and will probably cost me a bit more to have a USB version. That said, there is a very nice pro-gear alternative (Rolls SE162 Red Square) but if I buy a headphone amp it's a casually sneaky way of buying something I can use for my own fun during unwind sessions after the gigs AND my darling sweet wife never questions 'gear-for-work' purchases. Clever me huh?

So Head-fiers, please fill my head with options and I'll do my best to figure out how to read your opinions. Of course if you have something you want to sell me, send me a personal message keeping in mind that I'm in Australia. For now.

Thanks.

Best wishes for health, happiness and prosperity to every single bloody one of you.

Well stone the crows.........

Another Aussie !
I'm from Perth, HowdY or G'day.........

Trouble is I'm a Junior here, so my answer may not be too informed;

Your post was interesting.

First my (bad) thoughts.
I own a mindisc player and have owned a pav2.
Are you boosting the minidisc like this?

Minidisc--->pav2-->bigger amp-->speakers ?

or

Minidisc--->pav2-->speakers ?

Either way, I have read portable headphone amps work best with headphones. What I'm trying to say is the sound dynamics you want might come through on headphones but because of impedance (or whatever not sure the exact term) speakers will sound crap. Someone could correct me on this, but also the signal level output from a headphone jack is different the signal level output on a speaker jack. There are portable amps that "will drive" speakers, but I would not try it with an expensive portable headphone amp.

Which leads me to;
My (good) thought;

Here is an amp, dirt cheap. It's supposed to be good and help improve bass response. Review here;http://www.onheadphones.com/product-reviews/amplifiers/micro-cmoy-opamp2227.html

Available here; eBay Seller: juice2214: Accessories, Electronics items on eBay Australia

cheers cobber !

Thanks for that. I wasn't sure I'd get any responses...

First up, for my live rig I'm currently going minidisc>>>>PA2V2>>>>>Behringer Enhancer>>>>mixer>>>>>amp>>>>speakers.

At the volumes I'm performing at, there is no distortion (I'm an X-studio hack from way back and the ears are still very good) despite all the opportunities for disaster. I have good gear for the purpose and keep it well maintained. I'm also the kind of guy who develops a nervous twitch at the slightest hint of over-kill, excessive complications, or as mentioned, distortion. I'm playing hotels for God's sake. And I'm seriously muddle-aged having been at this game for 30-plus years. The gear is getting better, smaller, lighter and cheaper. I want to eliminate the Behringer Enhancer (it provides punch and clarity) and the PA2V2 with one small piece of wonderment. Your suggestion of a CMoy is appreciated though I'm guessing I'd still need the Behringer. I'm OK with spending more$$$ to sort this out; as I mentioned, my darling sweet beautiful wife NEVER complains about gear for WORK.

Just another note, I'm one of yer "new" Australians; originally Canadian though I've been performing all over the globe for yonks and have 2 passports. I get 6-8 months work a year (for 10 years now!) in lux hotels in Far North Queensland. I wear nice suits, utilize my Canadianisms ("please, thank you, yes-sir-no-sir-three-bags-full-sir") and play everybody's Mother's fave song. It's a wonderful life for an aging former popstar-flop from the Northern Hemisphere. Hell, I get to eat WONDERFUL food in 5-star hotels every night, play a few songs after which people give me money and say I'm great

Thanks again for your reply. And yes, I do love this country even though being an immigrant here presents numerous challenges best left to another forum. Australia has been the best thing for my music...

You bet I'm grateful.

Blessing.
