Quick questions for Sleek SA6 owners - Page 2

Again, another Sleek owner and fan, these are smashing little IEM's, the only weak points (in comparison to the SE530's and TFPRO's I also own, both 3 driver, 2 way crossover IEM's) are bass (quanity) and detail and clarity and instruement separation, though they are by no means major flaws.

Been lurking a while and figured I should chime in. I've been a longtime CX300 user and while everyone knows their faults I managed to enjoy them (other than the insane microphonics and y-chord). After a ton of reading in the forum I ordered then received the Sleeks earlier this week and while the sound quality is fantastic I'm afraid my ears have been trained by the CX300s to expect more bass. The SA6 seems weak on bass to me and some songs sound downright wrong. I just ordered the Image X10 and will end up keeping one of them. If I decided to be a fulltime Jack Johnson listener the Sleeks would be incredible...looking forward to comparing the the X10s

Maybe you were listening to them the wrong way the first time around...

Ha! There is one song that really sounds bad but its not a genre of music I listen to much so its not a big deal American Boy w/ Kanye West...so embarrassing!

As long as we're on the subject, two questions about Sleeks:

1. How do they compare with the Head-Direct RE2's?
2. Would they fit a person (me) who historically has only been able to use large single flanges with IEM's?

Thanks.

SA6 > RE2

If you don't like SA6 original flanges, there are Shure sleeves (except those for E2c), olive, q-Jays' eartips, and Comply T100 to choose from.

Yes, the bass response on the SA6 is what most people cite as a weak point; myself, I just craved that little bit more quantity. Now owning the SE530's and UE TFPRO 10's, I'd still say I desire that little bit more from the bass on the SA6. However, the bass response I am getting is more than adequate when using shure black olive foam tips, a resistor adaptor with my DAP (120 ohms) and some EQ from my DAP in the bass regions, oh, and of course, the bass + port. Note, there are mods you can perform on the bass ports (= or +) that supposedly inject substantial bass. They are relatively simple to perform also, requiring only that you piece the bass ports at certain points with a needle and then heat the needle, whilst it is still inserted, to ensure the plastic circumference of the hole the needle is making in the bass port is molded. Do a search to find out more if you so wish.

Otherwise, only from what I've read (as I havn't personally tried the Klipsch image x10), you should be very happy with the images. They are renound for a fantastic bass response, both in quality and quantity, and bass you say is a primary concern for you. Looking forward to hearing your observations and impressions of the 2 phones, once you've listened to the images and then compared and contrasted them!

I ordered some X10s too, and am interested in the comparison. I plan on keeping both if I like the X10s however, for the very reason you mention. The Sleek mids are so strong, I won't want to give them up for certain kinds of music. On the other hand, I did the bass+ mod mentioned above, and that's all I needed for non-acoustic music, including The Roots and other bass-oriented music I like.

So you might want to try the bass+ mod. Just stick a needle in dead center, widen the existing hole. No burning required. See what you think.

My X10s are supposed to arrive Tuesday, but I will be out of town. It will be interesting.

I haven't had a chance to do much back and forth testing between the Image X10's and the SA6's, I've been mainly just listening to the X10's trying to get used to the ear gels and get a handle on the sound. They have quite a strong bass that can have a touch of extra bloom but it integrates quite well. Mids are somewhat forward and the highs are decent, somewhat reminiscent of the E500's. The thing I'm really liking about the X10's is they have a full, rich detailed sound without being slow.

As I've said, I haven't done much in the line of switching back and forth but what little I did my impression when switching to the SA6 was it sounded a bit dry in comparison but when I went back to the X10's they sounded a bit dark in comparison. They have some similar qualities but overall they're fairly different IEM's.

That's a good thing, then. If I keep them both, I can see if they work well with different styles of music. If the X10s seem too dark, though, they may be headed back to Amazon. I won't be selling off the SA6s. I still am interested in the wireless thing, if it ever becomes reality.

Also, Lewislink says he tried the standard P Comply foamies on the X10s, and they match up well. Not sure, but I have a few old pair sitting around, along with some Ety black foamies and a pair from my Atrios. I can try all of those, which are of the larger foam family, much longer than olives or Comply T series. And they all basically have the same sound tube diameter, so they should all fit the X10s.

I generally don't find the X10's too dark, that was more in comparison to the SA6's, just like I don't really find the SA6 to be dry.

If I still have problems with the ear gels in the next few weeks I might try Comply's myself but they're really expensive to get shipped here so it would be a last resort.
