Oh, I know..I was kidding. Or comiserating, if your wife is anything like mine (read: non-audiophile, read: could care less).

I'll use the "Peel me a grape" from Diana Krall's "Love Scenes" as comparison, the reason is I have this track on other CD and I am familiar with it. I'm using AKG K501 plugged straight into the headphone jack of the Marantz SA7001.

I got the impression that the SACD layer is a tiny tad smoother, the bass goes a little bit deeper, and background seems to be a tad darker. I am not really the most experienced guy to notice the nuances, but to me, the difference is so very slight that it could be placebo effect.

Interesting. Are the two layers at the same volume?

There is no volume difference to my ears.

How long does it take you to switch from the redbook to the SACD layer. On my Philips, it takes about five to eight seconds... long enough to make any direct A/B comparison impossible.

See ya

Mine is no better, probably worse, on top of the 5 seconds or so it take to switch mode, the playing would stop altogether and does not pick up where it left off.

Which is why I use phrase like "I got the impression" instead of the more definitive ones.

Here's a suggestion... Rip a CD-R of the redbook layer and put it in a CD player leading into a preamp to balance the line level against the SACD in the SACD player. You'll be able to do a direct A/B comparison.

I did this with the Pentatone Stravinsky DSD SACD hybrid and a Yamaha CD player and my Philips SACD player and there was absolutely no difference between layers on my own system and the reference system of a professional sound engineer friend of mine. Even though it was two different brands and types of players, it still didn't make any difference.

See ya
Steve
