Well after all that searching I finally decided on the Opus Buffalo DAC and I built it up this weekend. You should know I never built anything before and this was my only diy project. The sound is amazing !
I was planing to compare it to some other DAC's but with sound so good, why bother. I probably will test a DAC 1 as I am curious, but this thing is amazingly good. Cost me about 400$ with all the tools and case I bought.

How about using Apogee MiniDAC or BigBen?

the VDA2 is excellent and if coupled with a dedicated PSU (VAC1) quite a bit better, IMHO, than the Apogee Mini

I run the 170 into a Stello DA100. Very happy with the setup.

I am currently running my iTransport through a Valab DAC, and the sound is not bad. The Valab really opens up after a couple hundred hours of use. I like the sound of NOS DACs, and in this respect, the Valab does not disappoint. However, I want to build a balanced system, and the Valab designer is not interested in making one. After looking long & hard at the PS Audio [noting the possibility of the Cullen upgrades], the Benchmark, the Cambridge, the Audio Zone [great buy on a custom balanced one on Audiogon recently], and even the Altmann [but not available balanced], I took the plunge this week and ordered a custom balanced Promitheus DAC. It will have both balanced and coax inputs, balanced and unbalanced outputs. Will post after it arrives.
