Earphone with breakaway or user replaceable wires

Well, with my ER 6i earphones dead in one ear, it's time to look for some new earphones. The problem I had with the ER 6i is that the cord would often get pulled by mistake. Over time, this must have worn down the connection inside my left earphone so the wire wasn't making contact. I'm pretty sure it's the cord solder connection because if I push the cord in, I can get sound. Also, I don't really feel comfortable re-soldering and I don't have the tools either.

What earphones would you guys recommend that have breakaway or user replaceable wires? I want to get a pair of earphones where pulling on the wire won't render the earphone dead in a year.

Budget-wise, I'm looking for a pair that's around or under $100.

So far, I've been looking at the Ultimate Ears Super fi 3. They appear to have user replaceable wires. Would this fix my problem of damage to the earphone through accidentally pulling on the wires? Should I worry about Ultimate Ears warning about not using them for more than an hour a day? It seems kind of pointless to get them if that's a real problem.

Thanks for reading.

You can easily solve your pulling issue several ways.

1. Wear the wires under your shirt
2. Wear the canalphones upward where the wire wraps over the ear. You can do this with virtually every canalphone including the ER6i.
3. Attach a metal aligator clip to the wire at the "Y" point and clip it to your shirt. The easy way to do this is to use a small nylon zip strip to attach the clip to the cable. The metal clips, found at O'Reillys, will keep a good bite on your shirt and not let go like a plastic one would.

If none of those suit you, the UE3, 5s, 10s and the Etymotic ER4s have detachable cables.

SF3 is probably the best you can get for the price and the job, but you should try what lewislink mentioned as well.
