Broken the middle of my HD 580 (the plastic is broken in the middle).

Hi guys I managed to break the plastic in the middle of headband (the metal strip is intact).
What are my options of fixing it?
Could I possibly use some tool to melt the plastic and have it connected again?
Or should I take it to repairs and have the whole headband replaced?

I recently replaced a broken HD-580 headband. Neither tape nor epoxy worked. Melting them like they repair motorcycle plastic might work, but I doubt it. The earcups need to be able to slide up into the grooves in the headband.

I called Sennheiser, and they took a few weeks to get them in stock. I paid $42 plus shipping, iirc. Plus you can get an HD-650 cable while you're at it.

Damn that sucks. I think your best bet is to go through Sennheiser though. BTW how did you break it??

An unsuccessful attempt to remove them from my head
Well I don't think I can call Sennheiser so easily since I am located in Israel.
I do have a stereo shop that was able to repair my older HD 575s and they have been supplying me cables for my Senns for quite a while now.
And I already replaced the cables to the HD 650 ones recently
I will try to talk to that shop tomorrow and see what they can do.
I understand that the only thing that headband does is hold the earcups and there are no electrical parts inside it so atleast the sound shouldn't change.

The sound changed a lot to me. I actually bought them broken, and listened to them taped together. The new headband made a world of difference in terms of fit.

Well I just taped them together and I must admit you are right
The sound is not same because of the fit.
Well I will have to suffer for a few days I guess.
I have found a number of Sennheiser representatives here and will call them tomorrow.
Maybe they have the headband in stock and can send me faster than that stereo shop (I had to wait some few weeks for the cables to arrive).

Another thing I just noticed is that that headband has started developing one more crack (barely noticeable now).
Not that it matters now , but I guess that this crack was developing for quite a while now.
I guess the main reason is that my headphones were dropped on a floor a few times in the past.
Guess there is so much the plastic can hold

Heh, broken headbands seem to be common with Sennheisers, mine broke when i fell asleep while listening to music. Woke up, the headband had snapped.

Cable is busted too. But the cable is fairly cheap to replace. The headband is worse, cheapest i could find was almost half the price of a new set.

Yeah, part of why I usually rule them out fast in spite of their reputation. I tried a few out once and they just felt so flimsy.

Well I wouldn't say it is that easy.
My HD 575s actually never got broken that way.
Also these HD 580's have been with me for a few years now (some 4 years).
Regarding the cables I have to agree.
Have replaced some 3-4 times the cables already because the sound was dissappearing on the left ear.
Recently I just purchased 3 replacement cables (two with 3.5mm and one 6.3mm since I recently got the Zero).
Now I am not worried in that respect
Anyway 42$ plus shipping doesn't sound like alot for their wonderful sound that I need to pay now for repairs.
I am also considering to get HD 600's in addiiton now if that bid on ebay is successful

Ok guys I kinda have found a way to fix it (temporarily of course).
I have put up a two pieces of plastic under and over the broken part and taped it together.
I have used the plastic from a used cdrom's box and it is flexible in a similar way the original headband was.
Still the fit is somewhat loose , but its almost as good as before it was broken.
I contacted the Sennheiser supplier here and I either will get lucky because there is a shipment from Sennheiser next week or if they refuse to add it now I will have to wait month and a half until the next one
